In this assignment, you will write an essay of 450-600 words in which you develop a multi-dimensional explanation of Mexican migration to the United States and contrast Mexican and Central American migration. Please watch the Professor’s lecture, complete the assigned readings, and watch all streaming media before completing the assignment. Do not quote more than one sentence from the readings and note the source briefly at the end of the sentence that you quote (e.g., Garip 2017 p. 95). A complete reference section/bibliography is not required for this assignment, however it should be submitted in an essay format. In other words, write your answers in paragraphs, rather than copying and pasting each question.
Instructions
First paragraph:
In your own words and drawing from course materials in this module, describe how the numbers of Mexican immigrants in the United States have changed since 1940. Next, select one theory of migration from Module 2 that you think applies especially well to explaining the factors leading to Mexican migration. Do not use migration systems theory. In your answer, summarize two major features of the theory of migration that you have selected. Then, specifically describe how aspects of the theory helps explain the initiation and/or perpetuation of Mexican migration to the United States.

Second paragraph:
In your own words, name and summarize one U.S. specific immigration policy that helps explain Mexican migration patterns to the United States. This policy should be a policy described here: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/09/30/how-u-s-immigration-laws-and-rules-have-changed-through-history Links to an external site.. Then, explain how the policy has helped shape the size or characteristics of Mexican migration to the country, being as specific as you can.
Third paragraph:
Drawing directly from one of the two required readings (Garip, “Your Place is Where Your Family Is” or Abrego, “Why Parents Migrate” chapters), summarize what you have learned about why Central American (Salvadoran, Honduran, Guatemalan) immigrants come to the United States. Offer a specific example from either the Garip or the Abrego readings in your answer. Then, describe one specific way that Central American migration/immigrants might be similar to Mexican migration/immigrants and a specific way that they might be different.
Fourth paragraph:
As you know, most people do not have a deep understanding of the explanations for international migration to the United States, including how U.S. immigration policies have shaped Mexican (and other) migration. Explain how developing this understanding has been useful or important for you personally. Then, discuss how having this more nuanced understanding of international or specifically Mexican migration might be helpful or important for some aspect of U.S. society (e.g., immigrants themselves, attitudes, specific policies, international relations, future planning, etc).
