Student will have a conversation with someone from a different culture, background, and/or life experience than the student, utilizing the questions from the assignment instructions below. This person should not be related to the student. After the conversation, the student will submit a summary of the conversation.
1. Identify one person you would like to get to know. a. This person should be from a different culture, background, or life experience than you b. Someone from a different generation is not a unique factor alone as we already had that conversation in the Generation Exercise.
2. Sit down with this person, getting to know them and their life experience. Consider asking these questions: a. What was life like in your home? School? Early work experiences? b. Describe your extended family. Who did you live with growing up? Who did you spend the most time with? Who do you live with now? c. Who were your mentors, key influences, and role models? How did they impact you? d. What would you define as the most pivotal event of your life? i. How did this impact you? ii. What do you recall about how your parents/guardians reacted? Teachers/mentors? e. How do your childhood, education, and family impact where you are today and what your life looks like now? f. Feel free to include any additional questions or ask about other stories unique to their generation and life experience. g. Take time to reflect on your conversation and what you take away from the experience.
3. Submit a summary of the answers to these questions and your reflections on the experience. The summary should be no more than 1-2 pages.
