Select a civil or commercial application that requires or leverages UAS-based remote sensing. Several examples of potential project application areas of focus include:
- geospatial (utilities, mapping, construction, etc.)
- first responder (police response, traffic monitoring, firefighting, medical emergencies, disaster response, etc.)
- precision agriculture (crop emergence, crop health, harvest readiness, livestock/wildlife monitoring, etc.)
- inspections (amusement ride, tower, and utility inspections, etc.)
- sport/entertainment (aerial videography, etc.)
Other applications of interest may be pursued with instructor approval. Include the proposed location(s), operating environment (i.e., coastal erosion monitoring in Hawaii), and any other specifics you can define (i.e., sensor coverage area, data desired, expected mission duration, etc.).

Develop the Requirements
Next, as a group, you should develop the requirements warranted by the mission selected. These requirements should define the properties of the end product and not the specific sensor or collection method. For instance, the mission should define a requisite GSD but not a sensor resolution or a collection distance (those will be chosen to meet the required GSD). Requirements should be written clearly and precisely, and each should be singular and individually verifiable. Examples of valid mission requirements are:
- The remote sensing system shall collect imagery with a 10 cm GSD.
- The remote sensing system shall collect imagery in day/night conditions.
- The remote sensing system shall collect imagery suitable for orthomosaic reconstruction.
- The remote sensing system shall record imagery onboard.
- The remote sensing system shall provide limited imagery in real-time for situational awareness.
- The remote sensing system shall be capable of operating at elevations greater than 10,000 ft MSL.
- The remote sensing system shall be capable of operating in temperatures as low as -30 degrees C.
While considering requirements, also identify any constraints or assumptions associated with your mission.

Assignment Expectations
Your assignment consists of a 3-5 page APA formatted paper (excluding cover and reference pages) explaining the mission and how it could be performed by UAS, the mission requirements, and how your team will consider options and create a recommendation for the organization to proceed forward. Later deliverables for this group project will utilize these requirements to select sensor(s) and a platform suitable for the mission. If you do not define mission requirements and operational environment in enough detail, it will be very difficult to justify your selection of UAS and sensor later.
Your application proposal should be professionally written as if it was to be submitted to a decision-maker in your organization for consideration, including sufficient background and needs justification with external sources.
