For Mina, the commencement ceremony was the culmination of a long and winding road to graduation. As she ascended the stage and was handed her diploma by the president of her college, her large boisterous family hooted and hollered their support, in spite of repeated directions to hold all applause until all the names had been read. Although both her parents were now deceased, her brothers and sisters were all there, along with her husband and three growing children.
The majority of her fellow graduates were—like Mina—nontraditional students. Many were military veterans who were now transitioning into a new phase of life. Like Mina, others had gone to work full-time straight out of high school. She’d met her husband Jake at the furniture factory where they both worked, and the children followed over the next several years. Mina had tried going to college before, but balancing work and a growing young family was overwhelming. As her youngest son reached school age, she resolved to try one more time. She wanted to show her children that they could do anything. Moreover, she wanted to prove it to herself too.
There were ups and down along the way. The classes were demanding, and she still had to handle those competing demands from work and family as well. Progress seemed slow and painstaking, but now that she had earned her degree, it all seemed worth it. That degree was one thing that nobody could ever take away from her.
Degree in hand, Mina wanted to make the most of her education by applying for positions that required a bachelor’s degree. She was convinced that the combination of her many years of practical experience and her education credentials would impress potential employers. She was surprised to find that this was not always the case.
Although the employers never came out and said it, she could see during her first few interviews that they often seemed surprised to see her come into the room. Mina’s age wasn’t stamped on her forehead, and she’d been careful to only include dates on her more recent employment roles, but it was clear she wasn’t a traditional candidate for the roles she was applying for.
Because she hadn’t gotten any offers yet, Mina started to think to herself, “What am I doing wrong? Do they think I’m too old?” As she thought back on those interviews, she felt she had answered the questions well, but on further reflection, she realized that the more she spoke about her experiences working at the furniture factory, the less interested in her they became. She knew she needed to try a different approach next time, but she still wasn’t quite sure what to do.
