SOC2123 Writing Project 1 Make a Claim
Your objective for writing project 1 is to put yourself in the perspective of a claimsmaker. The early chapters of your text discuss two ways to go about the claims process which can help you make your claims: the constructionist perspective (grounds, warrants, and conclusions), and the social movements perspective (diagnostic frames, motivational frames, and prognostic frames). For this project, you need to select a position issue (note: NOT a valence issue, see text for definitions) that stands out to you. Once a problem has been identified, you will need to 1) establish grounds/diagnostic frames and warrants/motivational frames. You will need to 2) support your claims with data. Finally, you must 3) propose conclusions/prognostic frames by offering and explaining a potential solution to the problem you have identified.
I’ve listed either perspective (constructionist and social movements) for each point of the prompt, but you only need to use one, I’d suggest the one that makes most sense to you when thinking through the process.
Make effort to be as precise as possible with your language and claims, and be sure that the data you utilize to support your argument actually does so (i.e., that the data is relevant to the claim in the context you are articulating).
Your response should be approximately 3-4 pages/~1300 words in length, with double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch page margins (see the template posted in the files section for a guide as to what your paper’s format should look like).
You must cite at least three sources in your response with in-text citations and a references page (references page does not count towards response length). At least one of those sources must utilize data. No specific citation style is required (e.g., APA, ASA, MLA), but be consistent in your usage and you must have both a references section AND in-text citations
