After being given a new position, which requires more teaching and counseling of staff, I would look for guidance in the senior staff. Since I have only been employed in the facility for 6 months, there are sure to be coworkers who have more experience and wisdom that they can share to facilitate my transition into the new position. A previous charge nurse, for example, would be the ideal person to ask for advice. This is because the charge nurse is expected to educate and make suggestions to the other RNs, for the purpose of enhancing patient outcomes.
Additionally, there are many resources that can be used in order to aid me in teaching and counseling the other staff members. For example, an article by the National Library of medicine states that the increasing availability of technology devices or portable digital assistant (PDA) devices continues to change the teaching-learning landscape, including but not limited to technology-supported learning (Gause et al, 2022). Technology can be utilized in many ways, including educating a staff member on the dosages or purposes of some medications that they might not have remembered. It allows for a quick search to be done to remind the staff of what they have forgotten, which in turn prevents an error from occurring. Furthermore, technology grants quick communication between staff, which is useful in the case where someone has to inquire about a patient, and are not in close proximity with the person they need to ask the question to. This kind of communication improves the ability for me to provide guidance to the staff.
Finally, with the kind of responsibility that the new position demands, it is crucial to be alert of personal biases that I can have. An article by FPM states that identifying bias requires constant revision and reflection as you work toward cultural humility (Edgoose et al, 2019). Considering the ways in which I refer to patients, even when instructing other staff on how to proceed with the case, is a way in which I stay aware of the biases that I may be expressing. Contemplating on these things, and my morals, is also an approach that can be used to assess my new competencies. It displays the effectiveness of my teaching and guidance.

As I transition into my new role, I will consider reaching out to various individuals and resources to gain guidance and support. Start by connecting with your supervisor or manager, who can offer valuable insights and feedback on your teaching and counseling skills. Additionally, seek out experienced colleagues who can share their expertise and best practices. Identifying a mentor who specializes in teaching and counseling can also provide one-on-one guidance (“Leadership in nursing – Brian Webster-Henderson,” 2017). Professional organizations, such as AANAC and NASW, offer a wealth of resources, including webinars, training sessions, and networking opportunities. The facility’s Training and Development team can also provide information on in-service training and external training opportunities. Any person interested in pursuing further education, must consider reaching out to local educational institutions, such as community colleges or universities. Lastly, join online forums, groups, or discussion boards focused on long-term care, teaching, and counseling to connect with others in the field and gather insights. By building a support network, I’ll be well-equipped to succeed in my new role and continue growing in my skills.
I will regularly assess my competencies in teaching and counseling to ensure I am meeting the requirements of my new position. I will reflect on my performance and seek feedback from colleagues, supervisors, and staff members to identify areas for improvement. Additionally, I will set specific goals and objectives for myself, such as delivering effective training sessions, providing empathetic counseling, and fostering a positive work environment. By regularly evaluating my progress and adjusting as needed, I will continue to develop and refine my teaching and counseling skills (Drabczyk, 2019). Moreover, I will also seek out opportunities to receive formal evaluations and feedback through performance reviews and professional development plans. This will enable me to receive constructive feedback and guidance on how to continue improving my competencies in teaching and counseling. By regularly assessing my competencies and seeking feedback, I will ensure that I am providing the highest quality support to staff and contributing to the success of my team.
I recognize the importance of being alert to personal biases that may impact my teaching and counseling. I will strive to be self-aware, acknowledge my assumptions and biases, and make a conscious effort to set them aside (O’Brien & Jacobson, 2022). To mitigate the influence of biases, I will actively listen to staff members, seeking to understand their unique perspectives and experiences. I will also engage in ongoing self-reflection, regularly examining my own beliefs and values to ensure they do not unduly influence my interactions. Furthermore, I will seek out diverse perspectives and resources to broaden my understanding and challenge my assumptions. By being vigilant and proactive in recognizing and addressing personal biases, I will foster an inclusive and supportive environment, ensuring that my teaching and counseling are fair, empathetic, and effective.
