It is essential to assess, diagnose, and formulate treatment plans for patients based on their medical and family histories (Huot et al., 2022). A patient’s medical history provides healthcare providers with necessary information regarding the diseases the patient may be suffering from, the appropriate treatment plan, susceptibility to certain conditions, and the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Patients’ family history provides healthcare practitioners crucial information on the possible genetic links to their health conditions. Concerning this aspect, it can be conclusively said that medical and family history is essential in formulating a treatment plan; thus, its absence, as depicted in the case study of the 65-year-old female patient, calls for effective screenings and preventative health measures.
Given the patient’s age and gender, as well as the absence of significant medical history or complaints, the preventative health and screening that I will consider include:
Mammogram
Based on guidelines from the American Cancer Society, women aged 55 years and older should undergo mammograms biennially (Merchant et al., 2020). Since this patient has no record of having undergone a mammogram, performing this procedure will be extremely valuable. A second reason for performing this procedure is the recommendation of the US Preventive Services Task Force.
Blood Pressure Screening
Regular blood pressure checks are essential for adults of all ages, including those without known risk factors; thus, the 65-year-old patient must be screened for the health condition despite showcasing no previous symptoms or complaints (Merchant et al., 2020). As we age, cases of hypertension become more prevalent, which is one of the main reasons for screening blood pressure.
Lipid Profile Screening
The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a lipid profile screening examination for individuals over 45 (Davidson et al., 2021). Colorectal Cancer Screening
Another screening I will consider in the patient’s case is colorectal cancer screening, also recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (Davidson et al., 2021). According to the task force guidelines, all individuals between 50 and 75 should undergo this screening due to increased susceptibility to the health condition. Though the 65-year-old patient in the case study has not shown any symptoms of the health condition, it is imperative that the screening is carried out as a preventative health measure.
Immunization and Physical Examinations
The other pivotal preventative health measures I will consider are ensuring that her immunization is current and a comprehensive physical examination (Davidson et al., 2021). It is recommended that individuals over 50 have an immunization history and data for such conditions as influenza, pneumococcal, and shingles vaccines that are current to prevent contracting these diseases. It is essential to emphasize the importance of regular check-ups for preventative care and early detection of health problems.
