Background:

The SAFE Home Project was an intervention trial aimed at reducing in-home childhood injury among low-income, urban families. The project took place in a pediatric continuity clinic providing medical care to children living in one of the most impoverished areas of Birmingham with almost one third of families having a household income of less than $5000. Within this community, mothers tend to be the primary care providers for children and are generally young with an average age of 24 years old with babies’ average age being 1.9 months old. Only 12% of mothers were employed, 14% were married, and 33% had less than a high school education.

Community Assessment:

In assessing the community, you found that 20% of children in the community came to the ER with injuries serious enough to need medical care. Additionally, many mothers in the community had hot water temperature higher than 125 degrees, were using stair gates, and had syrup ipecac in the home. Many mothers did not store poison correctly (in the bathroom with no lock on the cabinet), and did not have smoke alarms. You also found that many people in the community move often and the housing units will not allow tenants to turn water heater temperatures down. However, the community had favorable attitudes towards child proofing, but lacked knowledge about how to appropriately store poisons. Mothers stated their social networks felt childproofing was important and received positive counseling and conversations with pediatricians. Mothers did express a lack of smoke alarms and baby locks for cabinets in community corner stores, and lack of skills needed to install smoke alarms.
