MGMT2000 Organisational Behaviour Further Assessment (FA) Trimester 3A 2023 Assessment Brief Reflection affords the opportunity to consider how our personal and professional experiences, learning and observations shape our thinking and worldview. It is a process whereby we can learn from our experiences and connect theory with practice. It can also help us become more aware of are assumptions and preconceived ideas – and ultimately what makes us who we are. We can consider key moments, events, thoughts and feelings – from a totally new, exciting and fresh perspective. The key to preparing a successful reflection (written and oral) is to remember that is a personal response made by you. It will be influenced by your opinions, beliefs and experiences, your emotional state, and what is happening in the now (as well as in the past). Assessment Task Looking back…Letter to your 16 year old self This assessment is inspired by the book ‘Dear Me: A Letter to my Sixteen Year Old Self’, edited by Joseph Galliano (2011). The idea is that you write a letter to yourself at a younger age and offer yourself advice about life and events. Your task is to write a letter to your 16 year old self and offer advice. What typically happens when we are 16? 16 year olds are capable of abstract thinking and hypothetical reasoning. Emotional and social changes are taking place. Personality is developing and identities are forming. Experimentation occurs, boundaries are pushed, and we are becoming more independent. It’s an exciting time of our life. This task involves writing about the past with knowledge of the present. The idea of writing to your former self is unique way to reflect on an important time in your life and all the lessons you have learnt since then. The letter should be written in an informal and authentic tone. You are to use your own true voice and the letter should sound uniquely like you. Think about: • • • • • What you were like at 16 years old How you have changed and grown since then – what would you have changed? What would you have done differently? What major struggles or challenges were you facing? How did you deal with them? What advice would you give yourself? What life lessons have you learnt? What helped shape you at this age? Tools, tests and models to help you • Take a free Personality test at www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test and go to the Type Directory to learn more about your results and read about the 16Personalities theory • • • • The Five-factor model of personality Schwartz’s values circumplex Factors influencing perceived moral intensity Cross-cultural values And then focus on: • • • • • • • The situation (who, what, where, when) The event or moment you are going to write about The in-depth thinking about the event or moment The way you will reflect about the event or moment What words of guidance or advice would you give yourself? The ‘voice’ you will use How you will relate the message Remember: • • • • • It’s perfectly okay to use ‘I’ (and essential for this task) This could potentially be a powerful and revelatory exercise (depending on how much you are prepared to fully commit to the task) You may learn new things about yourself Don’t be too hard on yourself Celebrate the positive Don’t be fooled by this task – writing about/to yourself is not easy. It might make you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable –proud or confident. You might like to start with ‘Dear 16 year old me’… The word limit is 1200 words.
