• I do not have a specific industry of where I would like to work. I have mainly worked in healthcare for the majority of my IT career and am now working in the defense contracting space. Ideally I would like to continue at my current organization and pivot from the service desk to an enterprise cyber security role. If I am unable to make that pivot at my current organization I would not mind going back to the healthcare space either. Cyber security has always interested me due to it’s ever evolving nature and the importance of it. There will never not be a case where cyber security professionals are not needed. Threat actors will always be around to try and gain access to network resources to obtain data from an organization. Whether that data be PII, PHI, financial or proprietary data, it needs to be protected from these people. 

IoT devices are more prevalent in the healthcare space than in the defense space just due to the nature of security. In healthcare you can have various monitors that can be bluetooth and WiFi enabled to check on a patients vitals. Unlike other fixed monitors, this would allow for the patient to be more mobile and not stationary when getting these done. This would also allow for hospital staff to monitor remotely and not be in the room so they can work with other patients. Issue arises from this as where does the data go and how it is stored. Will this data be kept for an extended period or will it purged when it is no longer determined it is needed and who determines that? With the increase in more hospital groups, including Amazon purchasing a primary care, there is a fear that data will be used for sales and tracking demographic information. 

Other types of IoT devices that are used in the healthcare space are glucose monitors for diabetic patients. These monitors can help reduce the need to for people with diabetes to need to use finger sticks to get blood drops to check levels. This allows for an easier way for them to administer necessary glucose when needed. This allows for diabetic patients to not have to worry about checking before or after a meal as the monitor will do that for them.

I don’t really have an intended industry that I am choosing out of the rest, but I can do this post assuming I get an IT job at my current industry. I currently work at a manufacturing plant, but the company overall is a Research and Developer of material science. In my current role we work with a lot of sensors and information on a daily basis. So the company already deals with a lot of IoT devices and already has the system set up to pull that data, however I don’t think they do a great job of making that data accessible and easily readable to people who don’t know what it is. I could see myself in this role, taking the massive amounts of data and streamlining it into easily consumable information that can help the production line and increase efficiency. The other concern we have at work is data security, we have had issues in the past where people would try to get information from the plant from outside the plant with cameras and other equipment, so it stands to reason that they would try to access that information over the internet as well.  So cyber security could be a good place for me in my current industry as well.
