TOPICS / CONTENT / FORMAT
I. Creative Project
The different modern performances we have seen range from simple scene staging
that involves acting / directing to radical reinterpretations that can be performed as
dramatic monologues or ensemble pieces.
You may choose any creative means to re-create a scene, character, or theme from
The Oresteia.
Your creative work should come with a 2-3 pages critical introduction
about why/how this project came together.

II. Critical Essay (4-5 pages)
So far our readings and discussions have presented you with the general
background that has informed our understanding of Western theater as originated
in Greek tragedy. We have introduced theater as a communal lesson in
philosophical, ethical, and civic responsibilities with specific stage conventions
(tragic hero, pity and fear, catharsis, etc.). And we had the opportunity to see and
talk about several modern adaptations.
Paper #1 is your opportunity for further critical reflection using this background as
the framework of your critical analysis of ONE of the reinterpretations we have
discussed. You are asked to write a short research paper (4-5 pages) in order to
demonstrate your own understanding of the issues discussed in their
historical/cultural context.
Your paper should NOT be just a summary of the theoretical discussions we have
read and/or the ones you will research (i.e., do not just summarize class notes or
any of your sources). Instead, engage in dialogue with the ideas presented; respond
to them critically or use them to structure and support your arguments.
You DO have to take into consideration and integrate class readings and/or class
presentations. Obviously, the focus of the paper should be on your own research
and interpretation BUT in the context of this information. Choosing /refining your
own topic is part of the critical thinking process, however, if you need help, do not
hesitate to contact me.
