Explain the socio-economic status and challenges of your minority groups at the turn of the century:
Women’s Rights Activist: Women were part of the minority group. According to Edwards (2019) women faced many challenges including oppression, racism, and sexual violence. Unfortunately, the law made women the property of their husbands. Women activists rallied for women’s rights that included much more than the right to vote. Corbett (2014h) states that at the turn of the century, the number of women that were in the workforce had tripled, however, their wages continued to be significantly lower than men’s.
Great Plain Indians: At the turn of the century, American settlers started to move west and embarked upon the Indian settlements. Corbett (2014h) states that when the Americans and Indians had a conflict it usually resulted in an attack, although this did not happen often, the native American people feared what might happen. Starting in 1880, the American government tried to reform the Indians into the American population and the government sold over 80 million acres of Native American land to Americans.
How did the Industrial Revolution affect your chosen minority groups?
Women’s Rights Activist: Significant change occurred during the first part of the 19th century. New job opportunities, evolving conceptions of work, and boom-bust economic cycles were all brought forth by industrialization. The roles that women played changed significantly during this time. Women’s roles in the house were reinterpreted by industrialization, which also gave them new options as wage earners in the workplace (The Role of Women in the Industrial Revolution | Tsongas Industrial History Center, n.d.).
Native Americans were impacted by the arrival of new technologies. Hunting and fighting changed because of the increased effectiveness of tools and weaponry. The growth of trade and the movement of people and products were made possible by new means of transportation. How tribes interacted with one another, and the outside world was greatly affected by this.
Progressives impacted women’s rights activists and made them want to pursue more equality with the man, they wanted women to be seen as an equal and not as the property of their husbands. I feel like women today have more rights than ever before and this is related to the motion the progressives started. I also don’t feel like the American Indians had the same benefit. They lost most of the land they settled in during the Indian Removal Act which led to the trail of tears. A lot of their population died off during the difficult times from both conflicts and sickness.
