Part I: To begin we are just doing a tiny bit of unit conversion and significant figure practice. 1. Question 1: How old are you? ○ It’s okay to make up a number if you don’t want to share your age, we just need a starting point! ○ Your answer to this question should have correct precision, for example, if you are exactly 30 years old, then your answer should be 30. years to indicate 2 sig. figs. of precision. ○ You should answer with decimal precision as you see fit! ■ For example, if I’m 30 years old and 3 months then answering 30.25 years is fine! ■ If you want to get very precise you can add in the fraction of a year as well such as 30 years +101 days= 30+101/365.25=30.381 years. 2. Question 2: How old are you in seconds? ○ Make sure you show your calculations! ○ Again, you should maintain proper precision/sig. figs. 3. Question 3: Are you older than one billion seconds? (10^9 s) Part II: 1. Find any household object that you either know the dimensions of, or that you can find the dimensions of online. ○ Question 4: What is it? What are all of the dimensions you can find? ■ A common choice is your cell phone: it has several dimensions since it’s usually box shaped and they are often easily found online. 2. Find a second household object of unknown size. ○ This second object should be much larger than what you picked in Q4. ○ It would be ideal if this object is rectangular. ■ Some common choices are table tops, books/binders, or the floor areas in a room or the top surface of a stair. ○ Question 5: What item did you pick? Is it much larger than the first item you picked? Roughly describe its shape. 3. Measure the size (width and length is rectangular) of the second object using the first object. 4. Repeat step 3 several times, recording your data in a table as shown below. Present your data in the form of a table: ○ Trial Width (unit) Length (unit) 1 2 3 4 5 ○ The (unit) part should be replaced with the name of the first object. ■ For example: Suppose I’m using my smart phone to measure a table. ■ I can use the long side or the short side or the diagonal length of the phone to measure the table. ■ Suppose I use the long edge of my phone to measure the width of the table, and the table is 5.5 phone lengths wide, and 10 phone lengths long. Then the table would read: ■ Trial Width (phone lengths) Length (phone lengths) 1 5.5 10 ■ You can use different variables for different columns in the table (phone length for one column but phone width for a different column). 5. Compute the average width and length in your home made units. ○ Question 6: What is the average width in your units? Make sure to include units with correct sig. figs.! ○ Question 7: What is the average length in your units? 6. Compute the area in your home made units (be careful with units!) ○ Question 8: What is the area in your home made units? ■ If you multiply (phone length)*(phone width) then your units are: (phone length*phone width) or (phone area). ■ If you multiply (phone length)*(phone length) then your units are: (phone length)2 ■ There are any number of possibilities here, so be careful! 7. Finally, convert the average area into SI units. ○ Question 9: What is the area in SI units? ○ Question 10: Are your units more or less precise than using a meter stick or ruler? Why? How precise could you get with a meter stick or ruler?
