SOP Discussion question
The posting should be at least 150 words in
length. Please note that you are not limited to writing only about something you learned that
week. Rather, any connections that you are making between your life and this course is fair
game, even if it is based on something we discussed, or you read about earlier in the semester.
During this past week, in what ways do you think you conformed to the attitudes, opinions, or behaviors of others? What instances of others’ conformity did you observe (the observations can be real or fictitious [e.g., TV or movie])? NOTE: this question is about conformity only (as opposed to compliance and obedience).
During this past week, in what ways do you think you resisted the social influence pressures exerted by others? What instances of others’ resistance did you observe (the observations can be real or fictitious [e.g., TV or movie])? NOTE: this question applies to the whole continuum of social influence; therefore, your examples of resistance can be in response to conformity, compliance and/or obedience pressures.
Describe what you experienced and observed, make sure to clarify whether you are discussing pressures to conform, comply, or obey (note the difference and make it explicit!), and, as always, be sure to relate your experience and observations to the material in the text.

I often have to travel to Destin to work in my company’s office location there. I come from a very different area (I am aware I am only traveling an hour away, but if you’ve ever been to Destin coming from a more rural area, you know it’s different). When I am in this office, I often conform to the way they behave. I am more quiet, reserved, I wear my dressy business casual clothes than I do when I am at my home office in Milton, I am very formal with words and greetings. They all pretty much behave the same in that location, it’s very much a status quo with them it would seem.

This is probably not the best subject, but it’s the only one I have. I went out with my friends over the weekend to a bar on the beach. They very very much wanted me to drink with them (not saying my best friends peer pressure me haha). They all had a really bad week and wanted to unwind. I knew that I had several responsibilities I had to attend to on Sunday, so I resisted their influence of cutting loose and having a good time. I had another friend resist smoking when she was deciding to quit, even though many around her were participating while drinking.
With the issue in my Destin office, I feel that is a way to conform with their office, and not be different. I don’t feel like I am complying, as I don’t disagree or agree with the notion. I am not obeying anything either, as I am not asked to do these actions. I suppose I conform just to meet social norms and etiquette. I don’t feel like I am trying to fit in, it’s just a way for me to have an easier experience in my mind.
My friends group situation, felt more like …acceptance. I usually conform with them, and truly agree with the group. Most of the time, I would be conforming with the group and having a few drinks.

I do my best to make healthy eating choices and try not to eat a lot of processed foods. I believe this past week I conformed to the behaviors of my parents when it came to eating. My mother loves Little Debbie’s snack cakes, and I would put one or two in my pocket if I saw the cakes on the table. They both enjoy sweets, so I also indulge in them more than I usually do, when I am not around them. What instances of others’ conformity did I observe? My brother was also in town. He doesn’t attend church in his hometown, but when he comes home, he does attend church with the family because he knows we all attend.
During this past week, with Valentine’s Day coming up, I believe there is always resistance to the social influence of being in a relationship. I am not one to fall into the whole Valentine’s Day hype and I tell people that I am not one to be salty or lonely on this day. Of course, for those who are putting on pressure, this is not enough for them, they say things like, “It’s nice when someone else buys you flowers or candy,” and I’m like guys I’m good. I resist the urge to comply and connect with someone just because Valentine’s Day is coming up. My aunt understands my sentiments on this. She refuses to connect with someone, especially from her past, just to have a Valentine’s Day date.
I believe the Valentine’s Day scenario is an example of not conforming or complying with social influences. I refuse to change my behavior or beliefs because of pressure from my social group. There will always be some kind of kickback from my social group when I say I am fine being by myself on Valentine’s Day. However, some of them cannot understand my independence and comfort in my singleness. There is always pressure from a few of them and some constantly try to hook me up with someone. Now that I am more mature, I cannot outwardly go along with something, while inwardly disagreeing. I hate that feeling. For me, completing college without distractions works best for me right now.
