What is Exemplification?
Exemplification means to provide examples about something and is used in every kind of writing situation. An exemplification essay uses examples to explain, clarify, or persuade your audience about a general point or an abstract concept. The key to a good exemplification essay is to use enough detailed and specific examples to get the point across. Examples should be carefully chosen to appeal to readers and help them understand the main point of your essay.
Structure of an Exemplification Essay
Exemplification essays are organized with an introductory paragraph, several body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Each body paragraph should focus on a different examples.
Introduction
· Introduce the particular issue or concept you will discuss. DO NOT use phrases such as “I will discuss. . . ,“ or “This essay explains. . .”. These phrases are called Announcements . NEVER announce your intentions in an essay. Rather create a sentence with the topic as the subject of the sentence. For example, in an essay explaining why voting is important, the sentence may read as follows: “Many eligible voters have become apathic about voting.”
· Provide a brief description of your topic. Your description (1-3 sentences) may define the topic, show why the topic is important, or provide current information on the topic.
Thesis statement
· The thesis statement is the last sentence in your introduction . It helps your audience understand what you are attempting to reveal in your essay.
· This statement is your opinion which will be supported, using examples, in the body paragraphs of the essay.
· For example, in an essay explaining why voting is important, the thesis statement may read as follows: “The right to vote in public elections is not only a privilege; it is also a responsibility.”
Body Paragraphs—Repeat instructions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd body paragraphs
· Each body begins with a topic sentence. The topic sentence sets the stage for the discussion that will follow in the paragraph.
· For example, using the voting example from the introduction , consider the following topic sentence: “One of the major reasons why young voters do not vote is they are misinformed about the value of their individual vote.”
· Follow your topic sentence with an example(s) of what young voters say and believe about voting.
Conclusion Paragraph
· Reiterate your thesis statement for clarity and emphasis. This reminds your audience why you presented the examples used in your discussion.
· Summarize your main points (review your topic sentences).
· Close your essay with a prediction about the topic or a consequence of the topic.
Other Considerations
· Examples may be brief or extended. Brief examples appear frequently and function as concrete examples of ideas. Extended examples contain more details which explains complex ideas. Use both in the body paragraphs.
· Organize you examples in the body paragraphs in order of increasing complexity or order of importance, starting with lesser example, and moving forward to the greater examples in each body paragraph.
