Assignmnet No. 2 Statement of Research Problem This is the first component of the research project for this course. The project aims to get you actively involved in the social research process by developing a survey instrument on a topic of your choosing. The survey you eventually develop will be 2 pages in length and will utilize closed-ended questions. Your task this week is to write a well-defined research question, specify your target population, and provide background information explaining why this research question is important and how it will contribute to the existing body of knowledge. Think of a research question you are excited about and would like to learn more about it. The research question is the first methodological step the investigator has to take when conducting a research study. Note that in our case, this is a research question that could be appropriately answered by using data from a mailed survey. A mail survey is typically used to collect data regarding opinions, beliefs, behavior, and personal and organizational characteristics. It might help you write your research question if you sketch out some of the questions in your survey. • • • • • The research question must be accurately and clearly defined. The research question indicates what the researcher wants to know most and first. The research question should suggest variables of interest. The research question should specify the universe or population of interest. The research question should be testable. The assignment you will turn in should have the following parts: 1. Target Population What is the population to which you want to generalize your research findings? Your target population should have the appropriate expertise or experience to answer the questions in your survey. 3. Background Please provide a brief description of why you are doing this research, why it is important and how it will contribute to current knowledge on the issue.
