History and Systems of Psych Discussion Forum #10
In Discussion Forum 10, post your response to the following reflection question.
Thinking about the development of psychology after Freud, choose one of the figures in your text (e.g., Anna Freud, Klein, Kohut, Jung, Adler, Horney). Write a brief script imagining a dialogue between that person and Sigmund Freud, discussing how that person’s approach and understanding of human nature differs from Freud’s.
In your replies to your classmates, add to the conversation with an additional exchange or two.

Freud and Jung played an important role in shaping psychoanalysis. However, they have distinct differences. Freud’s emphasis on the unconscious, sexuality, and aggression contrasts with Jung’s focus on the collective unconscious, spirituality, and the quest for personal meaning.
- Jung would tell Freud: “tapping into the collective unconscious helps individuals achieve self-actualization and a deeper understanding of the human psyche”.
Freud responds: “the unconscious, driven by primal instincts, contains repressed emotions, desires, and memories that shape our psychological well-being”.
Jung: “sexuality and aggression is just a part of a broader spectrum. a holistic approach that considers different facets of human experience, beyond just sexuality and aggression, is crucial in understanding the complexity of the human psyche”.
Freud: “sexual and aggressive instincts, frequently repressed due to social constraints, influence personality development and psychological disorders”.
Jung: “the ego serves as a conscious sense of self, the personal unconscious contains repressed thoughts and memories unique to an individual”.
Freud: “The id represents primal instincts and desires, seeking immediate gratification. The ego, on the other hand, mediates between the id and the external reality, ensuring socially acceptable behavior. The superego represents internalized societal values and acts as a moral compass”.
Jung: “active imagination, art therapy, and exploring spiritual experiences to achieve self-realization and wholeness is also part of psychoanalysis as therapeutic methods”.
Freud: “free association, dream analysis, and interpretation of slips of the tongue as therapeutic methods of psychoanalysis”.

Freud and Adler played important roles when it came to the development of psychology. However, these two had differences when it came to their own research and that is what we will be discussing in a script format.
Freud: “I believe we are often motivated by our sexual and aggressive urges.”
Adler: “I do not believe so. Our feelings of inferiority in childhood are what drive people to gain superiority. It is the force behind our thoughts, emotions, and our behaviors.”
Freud: “I am only known to emphasize the sexual stages of development.”
Adler: “While that is true, I personally think social connections are more important. They are truly how people develop.”
Adler was more prominent in his research than Freud. He even focused on other social aspects such as occupational tasks, societal tasks, and love tasks. I feel that he really dove into what revolves around us as people today. He even explained sibling dynamics (but not a lot was confirmed to have been proven true) and contributed greatly to personality psychology.
