Conscious Capitalism and Whole Foods

The four guiding principles behind conscious capitalism are a higher purpose, stakeholder orientation, conscious leadership, and a conscious culture (Kenton, 2024). I chose to look at Whole Foods when doing research on how they practice conscious capitalism. Whole Foods Market’s purpose is to nourish people and the planet. We realize that selling high quality food is not enough, that we also have a responsibility to the people, communities and environment where we source and sell our products. We make our decisions based on this stakeholder model. Making sure we consider and balance the needs of all the stakeholders in our business (Conscious Capitalism, n.d.). Whole Foods also looks to give back to their local community by having a community giving day once a quarter. On those days 5% of a Whole Foods store’s net sales are given to a local nonprofit. It’s the stakeholder model at work, he contends: It creates goodwill with customers, motivates team members, and takes care of communities (Kowitt, 2015). Another way Whole Foods shows they practice a conscious culture is by the treatment of their employees. They allow them to be involved with decisions, especially ones that affect them directly like benefits. Every three years our team members prioritize and vote on the benefits that they most prefer. This process results in benefits that reflect the needs and desires of the majority of the team members in the company (Mackey, 2006).
