Hello Classmates and Dr. Ted, What are the advantages of a data driven website? -It would be rare in today’s world (or the World Wide Web) to see a website that is not data-driven. Government or informational websites come to mind when thinking of a non data-driven website, as they typically do not adapt or change to the user visiting the website. For most e-commerce websites, this would be a death sentence. The website has to be constantly updated with near real-time data. An example would be any clothing website. The on-hand or available products need to be updated as customers make purchases. No one would be happy to purchase an XL sweater that says it is available on the website, only to be followed up with an email days later stating it is not. It would also waste time for the company to take such measures. “Database driven websites are a form of dynamic webpages that use databases to update the information a user sees on the site” (Fhg, 2022). Having user-specific information on an e-commerce website can be a very powerful tool. It customizes the page for a user and can remind them of previous items they viewed or searched. This customization can lead to additional sales. What is a data warehouse and why would a business want to implement one? -A data warehouse is where an organization’s data is stored. This data can include employee data, customer data, supply data, intellectual property, transaction records, and any other data pertinent to that organization. In today’s environment, many organizations will utilize other companies to store their data (cloud-based). However, that is putting a lot of trust in someone else to ensure the security and availability of that information. So, having one’s own data warehouse allows more control over that information, its security, availability, and flexibility. In regards to the organization or company you have chosen to analyze this semester, what types of data management challenges do they face? What recommendations might you make to them regarding their management of data and information? -Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) has been the company I have referenced in a few posts. They have had their fair share of security incidents over the years. One in 2017 involved the database usage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and 60,000 sensitive files being unsecured (O’Neill, 2017). It also exposed AWS security issues (O’Neill, 2017). So, going back to my statement on databases and leaving that trust in the hands of another company. It is still BAH’s responsibility to be held accountable for this breach, as they decided to store the data on AWS servers. BAH should take this incident and learn from it by moving their sensitive data to their own manageable database. Yes, this will cost the company time, money, and other resources. Finally, data collection and analysis contribute to scalability and future planning, allowing businesses to anticipate growth and ensure website readiness for increased traffic and demands (Dunbar, 2023). How do you foresee incorporating data-driven strategies in your specific business or organizational context? Are there any challenges or considerations you anticipate in implementing such an approach? What is a data warehouse and why would a business want to implement one? A data warehouse is a centralized storage system optimized for analytical processing, providing businesses with a unified view of diverse data sources. Implementing one enables better decisionmaking, facilitates in-depth analytics, and supports historical data analysis, contributing to enhanced operational efficiency and strategic planning. What are your thoughts or experiences regarding the impact of data warehouses on business decision-making? In regards to the organization or company you have chosen to analyze this semester, what types of data management challenges do they face? Navy credit unions may face data management challenges related to security, member privacy, and regulatory compliance. Recommendations include implementing robust cybersecurity measures, ensuring strict adherence to data protection regulations, and investing in staff training on data handling.
