SNHU Hyper V Pros and Cons in Mixed Environments Discussion

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using Microsoft Hyper-V in addressing organizational needs with the technology your peers selected in their initial posts.

The virualization platform I chose to research and talk about is Hyper-V.

Hyper-V is well integrated with Windows OS and environments. If an organization is invested and dependent on Windows OS then Hyper-V is an excellent choice for virtualization as it is compatible will all Windows Server OS. Creating a virtual work environment with Hyper-V for windows dependent systems is seemless and easy.

One of the disadvantages with Hyper-V might be within an organization or system that utilizes multiple different platforms and operating systems for productivity. For someone not well verses in Windows OS utilizing the windows based virtual envrionment may present different problems and compatibility issues.

For my post, I decided to research VirtualBox. Out of all of the virtualization platforms, I am much more familiar with VirtualBox than the others. The impression that I get from my research is that VirtualBox is a very good platform for being able to create different test environments, but it falls short in that it doesn’t match the performance of its competitors.

Some of the major advantages lie within its accessibility. It’s free, not very difficult to get running, and has a lot of documentation to help the user with issues that they run into. This makes it a lot easier to help those who, like myself, are largely inexperienced with virtual machines. It was not as difficult to set up as I expected when I approached it for the first time. In addition to its ease of use, it allows the user to use several different types and versions of operating systems, which is not offered with every virtualization platform. This makes it ideal for practices such as sandboxing, because it offers a lot of flexibility in the types of environments that can be created.

Despite the positive features outlined, VirtualBox is far from perfect. As mentioned previously, it struggles with performance when compared with other virtualization platforms. Attempting to run graphically or resource intensive programs will not give the optimal result. This could result in certain functions not working properly, poor performance, or the need for stronger hardware to keep up with the resource demands.
