Political Science Pop Culture and Our Perception of Government Essay
Pop-Culture and Our Perception of Government Read/view 1. American Government: Myths and Realities 2. (Oxford University Press, 2014), Popular Culture & Politics sections of Chapters 1-3, 5-6, 8-11, 15. 3. Government Through The Lens Of Popular Culture (video) 4. When Pop Culture and Local Government Collide (video). Task Watch an episode of a TV show that deals with government/ based around the government. There are plenty to choose from. For example, “The West Wing”, “Parks and Recreation”, “The Colbert Report”, “The Daily Show”, “Madam Secretary”, “Veep”, “House of Cards”, “Spin City” (I’m showing my age with this one), or the new “Mr. Mayor”, etc., etc., etc. Even “What We Do In the Shadows” has an episode called “City Council” (Season 1, Episode 2). You get the idea. It doesn’t have to be one of the ones I’ve listed; maybe you’ve seen one I haven’t and you’ll give me something new to add to my unending watchlist. Once you’ve watched it, tell me what you think it’s showing you about how the government functions and whether you think it’s an accurate or inaccurate representation of that functionality. When choosing the episode you’re watching: 1. It has to deal with working in government, governmental function, or government policy. (“Law & Order” is not going to help you here.) 2. It has to talk about passing/ not passing a policy, gathering public comment, elections, or how the government deals with a problem that affects the population it serves. Try and pick something less about the interpersonal relationships about the characters and more about how the characters do their jobs. Two of my favorites are “Big Block of Cheese Day” from “The West Wing” (Season 1, Episode 5) or the town hall scene from “Parks and Recreation” (Season 1, Episode 1). 3. Watch the whole episode to see how it all plays out. The nice thing about network television is that it traditionally resolves or explains an issue in a single episode. Response 1. What show, including season and episode, did you watch and why? 2. What problem/ policy/ function of government are the characters dealing with? Some of the thing you can consider answering: 1. Was it a major or minor problem/ policy? 2. Did the show explain the significance of what it was dealing with? 3. Did it help you see the government in action? 4. Describe the process the characters went through to work within the government channels and functions available to them in the show’s reality. 3. In your opinion, is this an accurate or inaccurate representation of how the government functions? 4. How do you think shows like this one have influenced your perception of how the government works? 5. Back up your argument here with quotes from the show, what you know about government so far, either from this class or from your own experiences. Do you think working in the White House or City Hall really looks like this? Do you think policy is truly influenced in this way? Explain your reasoning.
