ACN Inattentional Blindness Personal Stories Discussion
RESPOND TO 2 DISCUSSION ATLEAST 100 WORDS EACH:
ORIGINAL QUESTION: Think about a time when you failed to notice something around you because your attention was focused elsewhere. If someone pointed it out, were you surprised that you hadn’t noticed it right away? Please provide a personal example of a time when you experienced inattentional blindness.
1. After watching the video and thinking about inattentional blindness so many things came to mind. I realized that we all probably experience this more often than we have noticed prior to this discussion. A personal example was just during the final week of the semester and while I was at my son’s football game. He was having an incredible game, making big plays and I was right there yelling in the stands being “that mom”. My phone went off and it was from a friend that attends ACN with me and her text said “Final grades are posted”. Instantly my stomach dropped and my mind wondered, My focus was gone and I was not longer the mom in the stands screaming at each good play my sons team made. Instead I was blinded by the fear of what my final test grade was and I no longer even could see or hear what was happening around me. All I could think about was getting home to my computer and logging onto my computer. I am a good student but no matter how I am doing in the class my testers anxiety will always take over and it is very common for me to become inattentional blind to the current moment.
My husband quickly noticed that I was not jumping up and down when my son intercepted the ball and ran it back and immediately asked me if I was ok. I said “yes, why”? He had to point out what was happening and what I missed in that moment. I was shocked to say the least that I could drown out all that noise around me!
This discussion was very interesting to me because as I stated before this happens to us more than we realize.

Unfortunately, I am embarrassed to admit that inattentional blindness happens more often these days. It happens everyday anymore. My mind is so preoccupied on everything that is going on between work, school and family. I have so many things, I am thinking about at one time. I am just going in motion. Most days I don’t remember driving driving into the work or driving home. I am just tired with these late nights doing homework and the long days I put in between work and school. I hope I am not the only that feels this way. If so then I need to reevaluate what I am doing wrong.
I was driving to a patient’s house last week and I don’t remember driving to their house. I was too focused on what I needed to do for the day. The same happened last week when I got off from the hospital last Friday night. I don’t remember driving home expect for trying to stay awake. It is scary now thinking back at it. I haven’t had this happen this often since before I started school this year,
Is this normal? What can I or we do to prevent this from happening?
