The Status of Senators Soldiers and Women in Roman Society Questions
Seutonius was a Roman citizen who lived from 69-130 CE and wrote biographies of twelve Roman emperors. Although his accounts of the rulers are anecdotal, they do provide modern readers with insight into Roman life. For this assignment, you will read two excerpts from Seutonius’ biography, The Life of Augustus. When Seutonius writes “he” in the passage, this is referring to the things that Emperor Augustus has accomplished. This is the same Augustus of the sculpture, Augustus of Prima Porta.
Step 1: Read sections 43 and 44 of the University of Chicago’s English translation of Seutonius.
Step 2: Answer the following questions
1. (Section 43) What kinds of entertainment did Augustus sponsor for the Roman public? List three specific examples.
2. (Section 44) In this paragraph, what aspect of the games is Augustus attempting to regulate? What do his rules tell us about the status of senators, soldiers, and women in Roman society?
