CJ professions work often in a physically and psychologically demanding occupation that can lead to a range of negative outcomes if not managed effectively.Trauma-informed environments seek to enhance feelings of safety and security. This presents significant challenges in penal environments where lockdowns, lack of personal space, risk of violence and confinement to a cell are commonplace. Practices like strip searches, the use of authority and difficult inter-personal relationships in a social environment that is not chosen to create additional difficulties and may echo or resonate with traumatic experiences. Staff may be influenced by vicarious trauma, which can affect workplace decision-making. The criminal justice system is also often highly reactive and ‘reliant on “management by crisis”’ resulting in hyper-vigilance or numb detachment within work practice.
Trauma Informed Culture requires workplace support that has been identified as an important organizational factor for worker outcomes such as burnout or job satisfaction.
The well-being of staff and the need for them to have adequate support within the workplace environment is critical to successfully supporting and serving clients.
