JWU Anticipatory Socialization in Transitioning to College Essay
WEEK 3 READING
This week’s reading will help us to describe the nature versus nurture debate. We will also be learning about how socialization changes throughout life and when and how resocialization occurs. Chapter 5 will introduced the importance of social interaction and the relationship to social structure. Our readings will help guide us to a deeper understanding of statuses, roles and nonverbal communication, as well as the benefits (and costs) of online interactions.
Read Chapters 4 & 5 in SOC6, 6th edition by Nijole V. Benokraitis.
Reflect on your experiences with the process of anticipatory socialization and a new role you had to assume. This could mean being a first-time parent, going to college, going into the military, beginning a new job, etc. Using terms learned this week, in your journal post, answer all of the following:
Describe the role you assumed and the rites of passage, ceremonies, or rituals that you have engaged in to prepare you for this new experience
Define the reference groups that helped you with this experience and define what norms, attitudes, and behaviors they helped you learn for this new role (be specific)
List the social factors that have contributed to your experiences (be sure to talk about history, geography, age, class, race, or gender as needed)
