REL 2011 FIU Suffering Evil and Transcendent Meaning Discussion
In class, we discussed The Human Problem (Chapter 9), and Theodicy, or God, Evil, & the resolution of Evil (Chapter 10).
For this discussion identify and describe why you believe suffering, pain, & evil exist in the world. Also, articulate why humans fail to find the true transcendent meaning they long for. Then, articulate in your view how evil and the human problem can be conquered or resolved at a personal level, and at a cosmic level.
You will be required to respond to 2 other classmates’ posts with responses of at least 75 words. For your responses critically examine the meaning provided by the sacred in the original post in order to demonstrate your understanding of the original post:
– “And created you in pairs”, this is a verse from the Holy Quran. From my beliefs everything in this life goes along with the opposite self. Heaven goes with hell, day goes with night, good goes alongside with evil, happiness with pain, etc. It is complicated for me to explain why the evil exists but first, I will explain why pain exists. Pain exists in the world in order to affect one’s personality. By personality I mean his behavior, his character, his understanding of the world. Either, pain makes you a better human being since you will be able to understand what other people feel and understand the pain they went through. Suffering exists in this world for one reason, without suffering we wouldn’t be able to feel the full joy of happiness. If there suffering didn’t exist, how could one understand what is good and how does good feels like and how can someone achieve that goodness.
There are several reasons why the evil exists. That might be because of jealousy, a person wants to have a power and authority over specific thing or a group of people, arrogance. All this can be included under the term of evil. Evil is also one kind of suffering. In my opinion evil is much easier than being good. Being good takes a lot of effort, energy and a lot of strength. Evil is also one sort of a test from a God. Being better than other people, that’s what I think is the main core of evil. If people would be happy for strangers achievement and wouldn’t be jealous of others success than the evil wouldn’t ever exist in this world. Since it’s easier to judge other person and easier to not sacrifice and put a lot of effort to achieve what others have done then evil will never disappear from this world.
– I believe that suffering, pain, and evil exist in the world as a consequence of our actions. I think that if someone acts inappropriately, they will have some type of punishment in their life, this is known as Karma, which suggests that good actions lead to good consequences while acting wrong leads to negative consequences. I also believe that people who don’t follow God’s guidance or make wrong choices will face consequences, I think this is a way God draws humans nearer to Him, as when there’s pain, suffering, or hardship we start getting closer to him and asking him to interfere in our lives.
Humans struggle to find the true transcendent meaning they long for because I think many people may not have a clear understanding of what their real transcendent purpose or meaning is, they fail to question themselves about their purpose or meaning or let external influences and societal pressures to shape their beliefs, religion, ideas, or perspective. Furthermore, our modern world is full of distractions, such as the desire of becoming wealthy, the pursuit of material possessions or the use of technology itself, which can hinder individuals from engaging into deep or spiritual connections, asking themselves existential questions about what their real transcendent purpose or meaning in life is, and what they can do to find it.
I think that addressing evil and the human problem involves being more aware and conscious of our actions, trying to do good to other people, and upholding moral conduct, while avoiding harm to others. At a personal level, I think it is important to practice mindfulness and engaging in spiritual practices that lead to positive thoughts, behaviors, and feelings, towards oneself and people around us. I also think it is important to develop ethical principles and values that define one’s character, promoting positive actions with other people, marked by empathy, honesty, and loyalty. At a cosmic level, I also think people should be more aware of their actions, recognizing that what they do can have either positive or negative impact in other people’s lives. Additionally, to resolve some human challenges, I believe it is important that society units as a whole, being supportive and advocating for equality and justice for everyone, as well as fostering peaceful strategies to approach conflicts, which can be the key to overcoming adversities and human challenges.
