Evolution is a key theory in biology that underpins much of what we understand about life on the planet.  As we discussed, it occurs through natural selection, genetic drift, mutation, and migration between populations.  Despite the fact that most people have some level of understanding about evolution and how it works, many misconceptions about evolution and how it works persist. 

Listed below are a few misconceptions:

1. Chimpanzees are the ancestors of humans.

2. Organisms produce mutations when needed.

3. Given enough time, all organisms would evolve to be as smart as humans.

4. Evolution produces populations that are perfectly adapted to their environments.

5. Evolution is only a “theory” and lacks evidence to support it.

6. All evolutionary changes results in adaptation.  

7. Individuals evolve through time.  

8. Evolution has a long term goal.  

9. Because of technology, humans are no longer evolving. 

10. Natural selection will always produce the “best” solution to a problem. 

11. Genetic drift only acts in small populations.
