Hello Luna. Thank you for your post. You point it out that culture is typically thought of as cumulative knowledge that belongs to a group of people over many generations and it varies from place to place. Cultural competence is then thought of as the ability to collaborate with individuals from that culture effectively which hopefully would improve health outcomes (Nair & Adetayo, 2019). Cultural competence is a concept that is mandated in order to dissipate health disparities among groups of people and improving their outcomes. It is important to focus on cultural humility as opposed to competence because in order to effectively care for our patients, we as nurses need to be willing to continue to learn and reflect and empathize with our patients. What I learned and “mastered” in cultural competence when I first graduated as an LPN in 2011 is definitely no longer the same. Cultures and ideas and values all change constantly based on new experiences and new information. By focusing and practicing cultural humility, it will open a more trusting relationship with our patients when we ask for their input or what they think or feel instead of assuming that we know.
