Optional Final ProjectIN LIEU OF TAKING THE FINAL EXAM, YOU MAY CHOOSE TO COMPLETE ACOMPREHENSIVE PROJECT OF YOUR CHOICEThis assignment is an opportunity for you to do a creative, comprehensive project for the Final INSTEAD of taking the Final Exam, which will be a cumulative test, similar to, but more extensive than the quizzes. Both the project and the final exam are worth 150 points and due on the day of the final exam. Your optional final project can be taken from the list of options below, or you may send me a request, proposing an alternative comprehensive project of your own design. The goal for this project is to take one or several aspects of the course and do your own research/creative process combining as many types of media as possible (visual, audio, etc). This will allow for a deeper learning experience and understanding in an area of dance history that means something significant to you.Choose a dancer, dance company, choreographer, genre/style, or masterpiece and compile a project utilizing your research and resources. You can use the link to ‘America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: the First 100’ or you can use a dancer, company, choreographer, genre, or piece of your own choice.Please complete the following five parts.PART ONEWrite two to three paragraphs explaining who/what you chose to research and why. In your explanation please address the impact your topic has had on you and why. Please discuss whether your general interest in any era or society contributed to your choice. Also include a short discussion of any specific media that contributed to your appreciation of your topic.PART TWOWrite two to three paragraph describing the historical context of your topic. Please include in your description any impact that the political and social issues of the era had on your topic/subject, and, conversely, if you deem it applicable, any impact that the topic/subject had on the political and social issues of the era. Also, include a discussion addressing whether the topic/subject has any relevance to modern society.PART THREEWrite two to three paragraphs which explains the history of your subject.If you choose a Dancer: Please write a biography that includes a chronology from the early years through the person’s lifetime, focusing on events that shaped his or her talent, passion or character. Please consider what compelled this person to become a dancer, and what specific contributions were made to the world of dance. Also, consider how his or her art was affected by personal life, personality, and/or mental and physical makeup. Also, please include the roles that were danced, dance partners, and any impact that this dancer had on the dance community, both during the person’s lifetime and today.If you choose a dance company: Please address the following questions. Who started the company? What was the background of the Artistic Director? When and where did it start, and what was its progression? What style/genre did/does the company perform, and how is this company unique, if at all? What are its strengths and weaknesses? What impact has the company had on the dance community, and do you feel that the company has any relevance today?If you choose a choreographer: Please write a biography that includes a chronology from the early years through the person’s lifetime, focusing on events that shaped his or her talent, passion or character. Please consider what compelled this person to become a choreographer, and what specific contributions were made to the world of dance. Also, consider how his or her choreography was affected by personal life, personality, and/or mental and physical makeup. Also, please include the specific works that the person choreographed, whether you believe that certain roles or scenes were created for specific dancers or dance partners, or for specific composers, and any impact that this choreographer had on the dance community, both during the person’s lifetime and today.If you choose a genre/style: Please address the following questions. When and how did this genre/style emerge? What are its roots and how has it progressed over time? Were there any political or social events that facilitated the emergence or creation of this genre/style? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Do you deem it to be traditional or popular culture? Do you think that it is relevant to modern society, and why? Will it be relevant in the future, and why? What impact has it had on the dance community?If you choose a Masterpiece (original piece of choreography): Please address the following questions. Who was the original choreographer of the piece? Who originally danced in this piece of choreography? Do you think that the piece was created for specific dancers or composers? What genre/style was the original choreography and what was it about? Were there any political or social events that facilitated or inspired the creation of this piece? What music was used and who was the original composer of that music? Has this piece been re-staged? Approximately how many times has it been performed? Does the piece have relevance to modern society, and why? Do you think that it will be relevant in the future, and why? What impact has it had on the dance community?PART FOURWrite two to three paragraphs describing how this research has deepened your learning/understanding of Dance History. What has changed for you, if anything at all, as a result of completing this project? Do you have a greater appreciation of dance or different genre/styles of dance? Do you have a greater appreciation for the dancers, or choreographers? Did you learn anything about the effects of political and social historical events on dance, and vice versa?
