Introduction
The hierarchy of needs is a theory of motivation that was developed by psychotherapist Abraham Maslow in the 1960s. It’s a theory that describes how people progress through stages of development and what motivates them at each stage. According to this model, humans are motivated by five core needs: physiological, safety, love/belongingness, self-esteem/achievement/mastery (ESTJ), and transcendence (ESFJ).
Physiological needs – These are biological requirements for human survival, e.g. air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sex, sleep.
Your body needs food, water, oxygen and sleep. If you don’t have these things then you will die. You can’t live without them! Physiological needs are the most important because they are necessary for survival.
Safety needs – Protection from elements, security, order, law, limits, stability, freedom from fear.
The first three of Maslow’s needs are called “safety needs.” These are the most basic, human needs. They include protection from elements and danger, psychological safety (a sense of security), order, and law.
Safety is important for survival because it protects you from harm. For example: if you’re alone in a forest with no shelter or food source nearby and suddenly realize that there are bears nearby who might attack you at any time—this would be considered an instance of physical danger; but if your car breaks down on the side of the road and becomes stuck in mud on a rainy day when nobody else is around for miles—this would also be considered an instance of physical danger because then there wouldn’t be anyone else around to help rescue them either! So even though these two situations sound pretty different from each other from an outsider’s perspective…they’re really just one situation after another all rolled up together into one big ball: “Dangerous Environment + No Shelter + Injured Body = Death”.
This concept applies across species too; animals too need their own forms/styles/stages within which they can survive comfortably (as well as humans).
Love and belongingness needs – Friendship, intimacy, affection and love, – from work group, family, friends etc.
The second level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is the love and belongingness needs. Love and belongingness are about feeling comfortable in your environment, and having people who know you well enough to be able to help you when you need it.
These types of relationships are often formed through friendships, which are relationships between two or more people that involve mutual affection, trust, understanding and respect.
Esteem needs – Self-esteem, achievement and mastery from gain of respect of others. Also includes perceived status and importance.

Self-esteem is important for motivation because it can help you feel good about yourself when you do well at something or achieve success in your career. This feeling motivates you to keep going even when things get difficult or difficult challenges are thrown your way because it makes you feel good about yourself and gives you confidence that no matter what happens, there’s always hope for improvement so long as one has desire for success!
Self-actualization needs – Realizing personal potentials/abilities/talents is key to self-actualization.
Self-actualization is the motivation to realize one’s full potential and become the best person you can be. It is a process of becoming all that you are capable of becoming, and it requires self-motivation. This means that one must have an active interest in what they want to do, as well as the desire to achieve their goals through hard work. Self-actualization also requires a strong sense of purpose in life; this means having something meaningful to do with your time on earth (such as helping others), but also having other things like hobbies or interests outside of work that keep your mind occupied when not working on projects related directly back towards self-actualization!
Self-transcendence needs – The need to help others transcend themselves and do something great for the world (or at least your corner of it).

This can be anything from volunteering at a local animal shelter, donating money to charity, or even starting a business that helps people.
You can motivate yourself without being mean to yourself.
Motivation is a complex process. There are many different types of motivation, and they can be external or internal, intrinsic or extrinsic. Sometimes it’s goal-oriented (e.g., “I want this job”) and sometimes it’s process-oriented (e.g., “I will learn how to do this job better”). Some people use short-term motivation when they need something right away like money for rent or food for their family; other people use long-term motivations where the goal takes longer than a few years but still important enough that you want to reach it before your time runs out on Earth!

The next time you’re feeling down, take a deep breath and try to remember that there are plenty of people out there who would love to be in your shoes. And if you don’t think they are, well then it might just be time for a change!
