Types of barriers/disparities that limit the ability to lead a healthier life
Introduction
The fact is, most of us don’t lead the healthiest lives. In fact, we’re not even close! But why? Why are so many people overweight or obese? Why can’t people just eat healthy food and get fit? I’ve heard all kinds of reasons why this is impossible but here’s my theory: it’s not possible because there are barriers between us and our goals.
Economic Barriers
-
Difficulty in affording healthy food. The cost of healthy foods can be a barrier for many people. For example, if you live paycheck to paycheck and rely on take-out dinners from the local fast food restaurant or drive-thru window every night, it may be difficult for you to find time for cooking at home. You may also have difficulty finding affordable produce at your local grocery store or farmer’s market due to its limited availability and high demand (which makes it more expensive). Some data suggests that up to 80% of Americans struggle with this kind of cost when it comes time for them to eat well but still want something other than fast food or processed convenience foods.*
Social Barriers
Social barriers can be a lack of access to healthcare, or lack of education. They can also be a lack of access to healthy food and exercise facilities. Finally, social barriers might include transportation issues (e.g., no car).
Environmental Barriers
You are not alone if you find that your physical health is limited by a lack of access to healthy food, safe places to exercise and clean water. People living in poverty often have limited access to healthcare providers who can provide them with vital medical care. Many people live in areas where there aren’t enough grocery stores or banks that accept their debit cards for payment (or even carry the same brand name products). This means that many people have trouble getting what they need for basic needs like housing, food and clothing—which can lead directly back into poor health outcomes such as obesity related diseases like diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), hypertension (HTN), coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke and high cholesterol levels among others.*
Policy Barriers
-
Policy barriers are a set of laws, regulations and policies that limit the ability of people to lead healthier lives. They can be found at all levels of government, including federal, state and local. For example:
-
Tobacco control laws restrict access to tobacco products like cigarettes and cigars;
-
Alcohol control laws prohibit minors from purchasing alcohol or serving as bartenders;
-
Exercise equipment may not be available in public places where it’s needed most (e.g., parks);
Takeaway:
The takeaway is a summary of the article and it should be related to the topic. The takeaway should also be relevant for your reader, so make sure you choose something that will help them improve their lifestyle or change their behavior. For example, if you are writing about how people with disabilities can lead a healthy life, then your recommendation might be something like: “Takeaway: When living with chronic illness or disability doesn’t stop us from living our best lives – it only makes us stronger!”
The takeaway is actionable in that it tells readers what they can do next if they want to live healthier lives themselves by following these tips on overcoming barriers/disparities that limit our ability lead healthy lives as much as possible
Conclusion
It is important to note that these barriers can be overcome with the right support. There are many programs and initiatives out there which aim to help people overcome these barriers, including programs that provide free health screenings, life coaching sessions, and motivational workshops. In order to ensure everyone has access to the services they need, it’s important we work together as a community to make sure everyone is able lead a healthy life.
