Terrorism Preparedness
Introduction
The news is full of stories about terrorist attacks and the threat they pose to our safety. While many people are aware that there is an increased risk of a terrorist attack in the United States, some may not know how to prepare for one or what they should do if one happens. The best way to stay safe during this time is by being prepared for any scenario that may occur.
Be aware of your surroundings.
-
Be aware of your surroundings.
-
If you see something, say something. If someone looks suspicious or seems to be acting in an unusual way, report the incident to the police.
Know who to contact in case of emergency.
You should know who to contact in case of an emergency.
-
911 – this number is for emergencies, such as natural disasters and crimes against people.
-
Fire department – if you smell smoke or see flames, call the fire department right away. It will help them find out what’s going on and get everyone out safely!
-
Police Department – they can help with investigating crime scenes too (like finding fingerprints), so it’s important that you let them know if there has been any suspicious activity at your home or workplace lately.* Ambulance service – this is a good option if someone gets hurt during an attack; they’re trained professionals who know how best to treat injuries caused by gunfire or explosives.* Hospital emergency room/ER–these are places where doctors can treat injured victims quickly without having to wait for paramedics from their local ambulance service
Prepare an emergency kit to protect yourself and loved ones.
A well-stocked emergency kit can be a life-saver when disaster strikes. Here are some items to consider adding:
-
Food and water. Stock up on nonperishable foods such as canned meats, vegetables and fruits, dried fruit, crackers and other convenience foods (make sure they have a long shelf life). You may also want to include canned pasta or rice in your stockpile; these will help stretch out the meals you prepare for yourself if there’s no electricity for cooking.
-
Prescription medications like painkillers or blood pressure medication—these should be kept in an easy-to-grab location so that you’ll have access when needed most. If possible, store them in glass jars rather than plastic containers so they won’t break during impact from an earthquake or storm surge floodwaters.* Important documents including insurance papers/wills/birth certificates etc., passports – especially if leaving home for any length of time because this could mean having someone else care for loved ones during emergencies like hurricanes (think about those who live far away from where they work so they can’t get back home quickly during natural disasters).
Learn the warning signs of a terrorist or suspicious activity and report these activities immediately to the police.
-
Learn the warning signs of a terrorist or suspicious activity and report these activities immediately to the police.
-
Report suspicious activity to the FBI if it involves espionage, terrorism or other crimes against national security.
-
Report suspicious activity to local police stations, sheriff’s offices and fire departments when you see something that seems off-kilter in your community.
Carry any medicine you may need for at least one week with you at all times.
-
Carry a first aid kit.
-
Carry medicine for common ailments, such as bronchitis, colds and the flu.
-
Carry prescription medicines (in case you need them).
-
Keep emergency contact information in your wallet or purse at all times so that you can get in touch with someone in case of an emergency during travel or other activities.
Have a family emergency plan established, including a meeting place in case you can’t go home.
If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot return home, have a family emergency plan established. This can take many forms, but it should include:
-
Meeting place in case of separation (this could be your parents’ house or a hotel)
-
What to do if you can’t go home (e.g., call 911)
-
Safe place where everyone knows about the meeting place – this is especially important for children who may not understand why their parents aren’t there at all times
Consider enrolling in classes to learn first aid skills, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other methods to help during a terrorist attack.
If you’re interested in learning first aid skills, there are a number of courses available through community colleges and universities. In addition to learning CPR and other methods to help during a terrorist attack, these classes will also help you prepare for any other emergency situation that may arise.
In addition to preparing for emergencies like terrorism, it’s important to make sure your family knows how to respond if they’re exposed or injured by chemical agents or radiation (e.g., nuclear accidents).
Ensure your safety by keeping prepared for any terror attacks.
By keeping prepared for any terror attacks, you can avoid being caught off-guard and help prevent injury or death.
-
Be aware of your surroundings: When you’re at home or out in public, try to take note of what’s going on around you. Are there people walking through the area? Are there cars parked nearby? If so, who are they? How old are they? What do they look like (men vs women)? Where are they coming from (a door into the building or an alleyway)? What direction did they come from (toward their car or away from it) and how many minutes ago did this happen; do these individuals appear nervous about something; does their behavior suggest that someone might be following them – if yes then report those suspicious activities immediately!
-
Know who to contact in case of emergency: Make sure that everyone knows where each person should go if there’s an emergency like fire/rescue workers arriving at home as well as other family members such as parents/grandparents etc., even though many times these people may not live close by yet still want access through telephone lines so make sure everyone knows where those numbers are located before anything happens!
Conclusion
Terrorist attacks have become a reality, and it’s important that you are prepared. We’ve covered some of the most common elements of terrorism preparedness here, but there are many other ways you can protect yourself from potential threats. In addition to being aware of your surroundings and reporting suspicious activity immediately, carrying an emergency kit and learning first aid skills will make all the difference in an attack scenario.
