Methodology in research
Introduction
The methodology is the way in which an academic researcher carries out their research. This will vary depending on the subject matter and approach, but it’s important to understand what a specific methodology looks like so that you can evaluate whether or not it’s suitable for your study.
Definition of the methodology
The methodology is a set of scientific principles that guide the research process. It is also a way to organize and structure the research process. The methodology provides procedures for collecting, organizing, and analyzing data; these procedures may be applied as needed during each stage of your project (e.g., design phase). A methodology can be defined as:
-
An approach or method used in conducting research;
-
A set of rules or guidelines for performing a certain type of research;
Methodology types
There are four types of methods that can be used in research: descriptive, explanatory, comparative and experimental. The first three are quantitative while case study is qualitative.
Descriptive methods include observational studies and surveys. Observational research involves collecting data without intervening directly on the phenomenon being studied (e.g., interviewing people about their experiences). Surveys involve asking participants questions about their beliefs or behaviors so you can get a general understanding of what people think or do in certain situations; however, this type of research does not allow for any direct conclusions about cause-effect relationships between variables because no one knows how many people took part in your survey – only how many completed it!
Data gathering methods
Data gathering methods are the way you collect data for your research. They can be qualitative or quantitative, depending on what type of data is important to you and how it will be used. Qualitative data is gathered through observation, interviews, and focus groups; quantitative data is gathered through surveys, questionnaires, and experiments.
Research approach
The research approach is the way you will approach the problem. It’s also called an “approach statement.” Your research approach should include:
-
Identifying your research question(s) and developing a hypothesis that answers those questions.
-
Gathering information to answer these questions, including data collection methods like interviews, focus groups or surveys; analysis methods such as coding and categorization; coding software programs (such as ATLAS); statistical tests such as chi-squared distribution; qualitative analysis techniques such as inductive logic analysis (ILA).
The following sections will describe each of these elements in more detail:
Takeaway:
The takeaway is the main point of your article. It should be a summary of the key points from your article, and it should be something that you can agree with, or at least understand. You should also make sure to include some actionable advice for readers to take away from your work if possible.
Conclusion
In order to conduct a study, you have to have a plan. The plan can be as simple as “I want to know how people view superheroes,” or it can be more complex, but it needs to be created before data gathering begins. A good example of this would be what we’ve discussed in this article – collecting survey data through multiple methods (online polls). You should also keep in mind that there are many different approaches when it comes time to analyze the results from your study: some researchers might prefer qualitative analysis while others prefer quantitative analyses based solely on statistics like mean score variability (MSV), standard deviation (SD) and related metrics such as interquartile range (IQR).
