Healthy People 2020 objectives for Access to Care
Introduction
The Healthy People 2020 objectives for access to care are ambitious and focus on improving the health of all Americans. These goals aim to reduce the number of people who are uninsured; increase access to needed health services for people who are insured but have a difficult time affording care; increase access to care for racial and ethnic minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities; and make sure that people have control over their own health decisions.
1.Reduce the proportion of people who are uninsured
-
The number of uninsured people has been declining. In 2013, there were 47 million uninsured Americans—a decline from the 50 million who were uninsured in 2008.
-
But even though the number of uninsured Americans has declined, it still remains high compared to other countries and to their share of the population that is poor.
2.Increase access to needed health services for people who are insured but have a difficult time affording care
Access to care is not just about insurance. People with insurance can still have difficulty accessing necessary medical services, and the problem is not confined just to those who are uninsured or underinsured. The cost of health care plays a role in whether people are able to get needed treatment, regardless of their financial situation.
This means that while we all want access for everybody and everything related to quality health care, it’s also important for us all to recognize that coverage alone isn’t enough—and that affordability shouldn’t be an obstacle for anyone seeking treatment at our nation’s hospitals and clinics!
3.Increase access to care for racial and ethnic minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities
The third objective of increasing access to care for racial and ethnic minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities is important for several reasons. First, it helps ensure that all Americans have access to the health care services they need. Second, it ensures that people who face barriers in accessing health coverage can get the care they need when they need it most—and not just when their insurance company is paying or reimbursing them directly. Thirdly, this objective will help reduce disparities in health outcomes between vulnerable populations like racial minorities and whites alike by ensuring that these groups receive the same quality of care from providers regardless of race or income level.[1]
Finally (and most importantly), this objective will allow us as a country to more effectively address issues related to economic equity in our nation’s healthcare system.[2]
4.Increase people’s ability to make decisions about their own health care
-
People should have access to the right information.
-
People should be able to choose their health care provider.
-
People should be able to choose their health care plan.
-
People should be able to choose their health care facility and location, if needed or desired
National public health goals should focus on improving access to care, especially for vulnerable populations.
The importance of access to care cannot be understated. The United States is a nation founded upon the principles of democracy, equality and liberty. These ideals are reflected in our laws, which provide equal opportunity for all Americans. As we move forward with Healthy People 2020 objectives in health equity, it is important that we focus on improving access to care for vulnerable populations such as racial and ethnic minorities, women and individuals with disabilities.
Conclusion
We hope that these national public health goals will help us to achieve them. We also believe that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services should take a leadership role in setting and monitoring performance against these goals, as it does for other countries with similar goals. This is because access to care is a critical issue for all Americans, and improving our nation’s health system will benefit everyone as well as improve our quality of life.
