Important power sources for a nurse leader

Introduction

Nurses are a unique group of people. They have to be both confident and compassionate, persuasive and empathetic, while also upholding the highest ethical standards. That’s why it’s essential that nurses have access to power sources that will help them achieve these goals in their work as leaders.

Organizational power

Organizational power is the ability to influence others in an organization. It is derived from the formal authority of a leader, who has been given permission and support by peers within the company or organization.

Examples of organizational power include:

• The ability to make decisions without input from others

• The ability to set goals without having those goals approved by anyone else

Cultural power

Cultural power is the ability to influence others through the use of symbols, rituals and language. It is a form of power that can take on many different forms in different cultures and can be exercised by anyone from an individual to a group.

In a healthcare setting, cultural power comes into play when you are working with other nurses around you who have different perspectives than yours. You may need their help in solving problems or addressing issues that arise within your unit or department. For example, if one patient needs more attention than another due to his/her situation (elderly vs young), then it would be beneficial for all involved parties if someone with experience working with such patients came along so they could learn how best handle this type of situation together as opposed to having each individual nurse try out various solutions alone without anyone else present who could offer advice or assistance when needed most

Personal power

Personal power is the ability to influence others based on your knowledge, skills and experience. This can be achieved through speaking out at meetings or writing a blog post that makes an impact on the organization.

It is also about being able to influence others by your presence alone. This can be done through dressing well and speaking eloquently.

Network power

Network power is the ability to influence others. This type of power can be gained through forming a network of relationships and using it to influence people in positions of authority. Network power can also be used by nurses who are not in positions of authority but have the ability to shape their workplace or healthcare system as whole.

Network power depends on having access to information, resources and people who can help you achieve your goals within an organization or system.

Expanded professional power

• The ability to influence the organization and its culture. A leader can create a new vision, set standards and goals, create a team of people who share that vision and work together toward achieving it.

• The ability to influence the lives of others. Nurses are often in positions where they have direct contact with patients on a daily basis—whether through their job responsibilities or their personal lives—which gives them an opportunity to make an impact on their own patients’ lives as well as those who may not know them personally but still need help from someone who cares about them deeply enough for them not only feel better physically but also emotionally (such as having access to mental health services).

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is important to recognize that power can be both a source of comfort or discomfort to nurses. The most successful leaders are those who are able to balance the needs of their organizations with the needs of their personal lives in order to maximize their effectiveness as leaders.
