Compare and contrast culture, ethnicity, and acculturation
Introduction
Culture is all about shared values and traditions while race is all about physical differences between people.
Culture
You may have heard the term “culture” thrown around a lot, but what does it mean? Culture is a shared set of values, beliefs and behaviors that distinguish one group from another. These things are learned over time through socialization in the family or community where you live. Culture passes down from generation to generation through storytelling and traditions such as food preparation, clothing styles or practices when celebrating holidays like Christmas.
Culture reflects how people live their lives—and it shapes your sense of self-identity as well! If you’re Canadian and love hockey but have never seen an actual game (like me), then there’s no wonder why I always assumed Canadians were obsessed with hockey since they watch all those ads on TV every year during playoffs season! But now that I’ve lived in Canada for more than ten years now…I know better!
Ethnicity
Ethnicity is a social identity, not a biological one. It’s defined by the group of people who share common cultural traits and language. The term “ethnic group” was first used to describe what we today call race or ethnicity. This definition has been altered over time to include other groups such as nationality and religion, but generally remains similar to how it was originally described: an ethnic group is made up of people who have some sort of shared identity—whether that’s language or culture—that distinguishes them from other groups in their community (such as members of another religious denomination).
Acculturation
Acculturation is the process of adopting the cultural traits of a different ethnic group. It can be positive or negative, voluntary or forced and conscious or unconscious. An acculturated person will have their own unique mix of both old and new cultures. For example, if you grew up in an American household but now live in Japan as an adult, your behavior would still reflect your upbringing but there would also be some significant differences between what your parents taught you at home and how other people in Japan behave socially—for example:
-
You might prefer to eat at McDonald’s rather than sushi bars because McDonald’s food is more familiar to you than sushi bar fare would be;
-
Your friends might find it difficult understanding why certain words like “konbini” (convenience store) refer only to stores with no seating areas where customers can buy food from counters surrounded by shelves stocked with drinks etc., when this type of store exists throughout Japan;
Culture is all about shared values and traditions while race is all about physical differences between people.
Culture is a shared set of values and traditions. Race, on the other hand, is a social construct that doesn’t exist in nature. It’s not biological; it’s not the same thing as ethnicity or acculturation.
Culture has been described as “the habits, beliefs and practices by which people live.” The word culture comes from the Latin word cultura meaning “to cultivate” or “to bring into being.” A person can have many different cultures within their lifetime: they may be raised in one culture then later choose to move somewhere else (like moving away from family), where they adopt new ones along with those already there—or maybe even none at all!
Conclusion
Culture, ethnicity, and acculturation are all about how we’re different from others. However, each of these concepts can be used in a positive way rather than a negative one. For example, if you’re new to an area and don’t know anyone yet then it’s possible that the culture may feel unfamiliar or even scary at first glance but once you get more comfortable with this new lifestyle there’ll probably be many opportunities for interaction with others who share similar values as well as opportunities for learning what makes them tick!
