Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. The administration of ophthalmological medications is a vital part of an ophthalmologist’s job. In this blog post, we will discuss the proper administration of these medications, as well as some common errors that can occur.

How to administer ophthalmological medications

There are several ways to administer ophthalmological medications, depending on the medication and the condition being treated. Medications may be applied topically to the eye, injected into the eye, or taken orally.

Topical medications are applied directly to the surface of the eye and are usually in the form of drops or ointments. To apply drops, wash your hands thoroughly and remove any contact lenses. Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze out one or two drops, depending on the instructions from your doctor. Then, put the mixture into a sealable container like a zip-top bag and throw it away in your household trash. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling the medication.
