Case Study 1 will include a short paper (750-1000 words) a discussion during the live lecture the same day.
Select a professional, peer-reviewed journal article that uses geographic information science techniques to address a societal concern.
Formal Requirements
Your Case Study should include:
Formal research citation of one peer-reviewed research article (students may choose their professional citation format).
Summary of:
Hypothesis being tested
Use of GIS as a method
Outcome of the analysis in providing a solution to the societal concern.
Discussion of article in the Data Science context:
Where does the article fit in the data science pipeline?
Explore specifically how the researchers dealt with the Data Capture phase of the data science pipeline.
What data were used? What was the data source?
What measurement frameworks and/or representational models and/or other considerations were essential in connecting the data to GIS and other datasets? (e.g. was the data raster or vector, or did it combine those? were the aggregation units standard or devised especially for this project)
A personal connection:
Why is this article of interest to you?
Was it easy to find articles on this topic?
What is your reaction to the research overall, the data, and the results?
(This could include such ponderings as: Did you agree with the original hypothesis? Did anything surprise you about the hypothesis/data/methods? What implications did the research have for your area of interest? What would you like to see have happen next? If nothing surprised you, was it even worthwhile for the research to be completed? Did this article change how you view the issue in any way?)
Hints and Tricks
Find an article that you will enjoy. It can relate to your major, a personal interest or a landscape/region that you particularly enjoy. It is usually best to select about 3 articles, skim them quickly, and choose the article that looks the most interesting and easy to read.
None of this should be a regurgitation of the article itself. I expect you to read the article, and then discuss the article, and answer the above questions in your own words. No plagiarism, please!!! Some articles and/or colloquium presentations may not fit neatly into the outlined topics for discussion. Be honest, explain why, describe why/how you decided on this article even though its method may be unconventional from a science perspective.
The articles must be professional, peer-reviewed journal articles. Articles of other types will not be accepted. I would suggest finding two or three articles owned by that appear interesting based on their title and abstract in the Index search (Web of Science, or other). Skimming through two or three articles will help you decide which will be most interesting for you to review. Use words like ‘spatial’ ‘pattern’ ‘analysis’ ‘location’ in your keyword search at or in GoogleScholar.
Brainstorming ideas:
Find out what GIS research is being done in your favorite national park or surrounding area.
Focus on a particular species: invasive species, endangered species, nuisance species and find out how GIS is being used to monitor habitat and vulnerability.
Select a natural hazard and examine how GIS is being used to predict, mitigate and recover from emergency situations.
Look at articles that combine GIS with other popular data science solutions – whether that be a particular programming language like Python or Java, or other types of information systems like Building Information Modeling (BIM).
Choose a popular commodity, material or service (avocados, toilet paper, roofing, opiods) and consider the impact of spatial pattern in physical or social aspects related to supply and demand.
Consider a dynamic issue of relevance to human population, such as a critical issue in public health, transportation, environmental justice, migration. How is GIS being used to improve conditions for people living in difficult situations?
