1. I am so excited to be talking about postpartum depression this week! I have done a lot of research in prior classes for this condition so it feels good to have some background knowledge. As a healthcare professional, I think I would take it as an opportunity to educate my patient on some of the signs of postpartum depression and ask if they have experienced any of the following signs: difficulty bonding with the baby, irritability, mood swings, the ‘baby blues’ lasting longer than two weeks, loss of appetite, insomnia, and more.never for any reason should any postpartum symptom be ignored. Too many mothers get denied the help that they need because these symptoms are seen as normal or pushed to the side as temporary. Usually, the most common patient is going to be a first time mom, a mom under 25, or a mom of twins. In terms of the similarities and differences between the presented cases, I can only imagine that psychosis was a present symptom in all of the women who killed their children but the differences range in the age of the children, the help they got for the conditions, and how many children were involved. I can’t say that I would provide psychiatric resources based on just hearing about someone’s symptoms but I would provide them with resources to attend group therapy, individual therapy, maybe some respite care for their children, and if needed, psychiatric care. I do however, prefer a holistic approach to postpartum depression and would lean towards a medical approach if necessary.
2.Something that really impacted me from these articles is how serious postpartum depression can really get. I don’t think it’s talked about enough openly. I personally dealt with postpartum depression and my mom is the one who pointed it out. I have twins and at the time I was so disconnected that I didn’t even notice. Many people try to put on a brave face and are scared to share what they’re feeling and what they need, when in reality, women need to consult professionals when they start feeling any type of way. I couldn’t believe that a mother was able to kill her 5 children without feeling remorse. She thought it needed to be done so they could be “saved”. I know that she was not in her right mind especially since she has a past with depression and psychosis. Her level of postpartum depression moved up to postpartum psychosis when she started physically hurting herself and killed her children. I don’t know if seeing someone would have actually helped her this far down the road since she had been planning it for over 2 years and had a past of her own. I personally think the only thing that could’ve saved her kids would have been if she was safely in a mental institute away from her children.
