PART 1: CREATE A POINT MAP, A GRADUATED SYMBOL MAP, AND A CHOROPLETH MAP

Using the data you collected in Module 1, make the following three maps in Tableau:

A point map of homicides for a three year period of your choice.

Color your points by daytime (0600 to 1759), night time (1800 to 0559) or repeat location for 1 point extra credit.

A graduated symbol map of shoplifts or motor vehicle thefts (your choice) for a month of your choice.

A choropleth map of any single offense of your choice for a one year period.

For the polygons, you can use police zones/beats, other city areas for which shapefiles are publicly available, or you can use census tract files.

PART 2: CHECK THE ELEMENTS OF YOUR MAP

Interpretation

I should be able to tell the offense, time period, and additional information about the data, including things like total volume of incidents, easily identifiable geographic trends, and other relevant information. For example: if there’s a standout location for repeat events in your point or graduated symbol map, you should write about it.

It’s acceptable to bring in outside information that will help the viewer understand what they’re seeing. For example, if there’s a parking lot that is an obvious hotspot from your map, you should tell the reader what’s there. This relates to theory: is there something about the location that makes it vulnerable to the crime you’re examining?
