Research: Research Design Assignment Instructions
Overview
This is the first assignment in your Research Project. The purpose is to scaffold the process of designing and conducting a research study. In this first phase, you will submit a research proposal and survey by completing this form. Your instructor will review this form and provide feedback to let you know if you are approved to collect data using the survey submitted as part of this assignment (you should create your survey at the end of this document).
Instructions
Be sure you have reviewed this module’s assigned readings and presentations before completing this assignment. Of most relevance is the Research Project Overview and Research Project Survey Instructions documents in this week’s Learn section. Format is for completing answers within the assigned sections and for proper format of the survey. Note that until the survey is approved by your instructor you cannot move forward with the future assignments associated with the Research Project. Turning in this assignment late, incomplete, or inaccurately formatted may impact performance on future portions of this project.
· There are two parts to this assignment:
· Research Design: complete the table below by placing answers where indicated (“<ANSWER>”).
· Survey: at the end of this document (where it says <Create Proposed Survey Here> create a proposed survey. It should be formatted to be easy for a person to read and complete. You must create the survey in its entirety within this document – you cannot copy / paste question(s) as an image as distortion may occur (you must retype them). All questions should be the same font and font size. Make sure there is uniformity in appearance and there are no typos.
· You will submit this assignment as a single word document by the due date in Canvas.

Scale of Measurement (nominal, ordinal, or scale): |

Appropriate measure of central tendency and (if appropriate) variability: |

Variable of Interest #1 |
Name of variable and/or scale selected (including citation): |
<ANSWER> |
How many questions? What are the answer options – e.g., Likert 1 – 5?): |
<ANSWER> |
|
How is this variable quantified? What is the potential numerical range and how is it interpreted? (i.e. how do you calculate the variable as a single numerical value to be used in SPSS for data analysis) Notes: if it is only one question, the answer will be similar to what you have as the previous answer; if scale is nominal, numbers are meaningless but necessary for SPSS so you won’t discuss the numbers in your paper but will state them here. |

What is its scale of measurement? |

Variable of Interest #2 |
Name of variable and/or scale selected (including citation if appropriate): |

Justification: |
<ANSWER> |
|
Research / Alternate Hypothesis (note this is NOT the null hypothesis). **It is common practice in the field to explicitly state the research hypothesis in the paper but statistically test the null hypothesis. |

Proposed Target Population (e.g., “friends” on facebook; only women, colleagues at a specific type of business – note you will need 20 participants from this target population, and you cannot use people you do not know due to the educational nature of this study and our IRB exempt status constraints – read the M2 Research Data Collection Instructions for further clarification): |

<ANSWER> |

Proposed survey distribution method (e.g., email, facebook, hand out paper surveys at your church, et cet – note you cannot distribute these in public places due to the exempt status of this educational assignment – read the M2 Research Data Collection Instructions for further clarification): |

<ANSWER> |

At the end of this document (starting on the next page), create a proposed survey making sure to include the following components: · Disclaimer · Directions to the participant on how to answer the questions (may need directions for each subsection) · Question(s) related to the Demographic Variable · Question(s) related to Variable 1 · Question(s) related to Variable 2 |

Homework: Review SPSS Worksheet Instructions
Overview
This worksheet is designed to assess your ability to perform, interpret, report, and graphically represent the following statistical tests using SPSS and standard reporting conventions as covered in this course: correlations, regression, independent samples t tests, and correlated groups t tests. These are standard tests in our field and are foundational to the more sophisticated research designs. Knowledge of these tests provide fundamental skills to critically evaluating and producing research in one’s field.
Instructions
Be sure you have reviewed this module’s assigned readings and presentations before completing this assignment. This includes using ensuring the homework is completed and submitted according to the instructions, SPSS output and images are legible and relevant, and that basic college level writing skills (e.g., grammar) are used in the write-ups. Answers should be placed where indicated (e.g., “ANSWER”). Note: all questions must be attempted to be eligible for full credit. Please note that for all problems in this course, the standard cut-off (alpha) for a test of significance will be .05, and you always report the exact power unless SPSS output states p=.000 (you’d report p<.001). Also, remember that we divide the p-value in half when reporting one-tailed tests with 1 – 2 groups. Also – remember to check your graphs! You often have to ADD the y – axis title.
· Submit the file as a WORD document (.doc or .docx). Make sure the filename of your submission includes your full name, course and section.
· Example: SPSS1_JohnDoe_515B01

A major university would like to improve its tarnished image following a large on-campus scandal. Its marketing department develops a short television commercial and tests it on a sample of n = 10, the first ten students who entered a housing commons area who agreed to participate. Attitudes about the university are measured with a short questionnaire, both before and after viewing the commercial. Attitudes were on a scale of 0 – 20, which higher numbers reflecting better attitudes. Use the provided data to examine whether the commercial improved the university’s image. The data are as follows:

5. Present the results using APA format. This includes a full write-up to include a complete statistical notation as shown in the weekly presentations. The write-up also needs interpretation. If significant, state how. If it is not significant, what does that mean in layman’s terms? Additional examples of APA results sections are also available in the “Helpful Hints” document. |

Scenario 2 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
To measure whether test performance can be predicted based on one’s anxiety, a researcher asked his students to come to the lab 15 minutes before they were to take an exam in his class. The researcher measured the students' heart rates and then matched these scores with their exam performance after they had taken the exam. Use the data below and SPSS to test whether heart rate can predict test performance in the population.
