This assignment will be a five-page report based on attendance to any 12-step open meeting. This includes but is not limited to AA, Narcotics or any other of the multitude of “Anonymous” meetings based on the 12-step program. You should attend the meeting on your own and not be in the company of a relative or friend. Try to attend a meeting where there is a very low probability that you may encounter a friend or relative.
Field Assignment: This task starts immediately after you know about this assignment. You will need to determine which type of meeting you will attend and in what format. Additionally, the paper should outline the steps you journeyed through to accomplish the assignment. Keep a journal about the experience from the moment you start thinking how you will approach the assignment, the journal will help you in writing the paper later on. The report is a thoughtful integration of the course material in combination with your 12-step field experience.
Just a note, while some students find this experience enlightening, others find it uncomfortable. You are not required to “share” during a 12-step meeting, however, some students have. It is preferred that you not disclose your reason for observing, but this is also your choice. Everyone brings separate and distinct personalities, experiences and emotions to a meeting including you, even if you are only there to observe. If you have emotions that rise to the surface during this assignment, you will need to document privately to the facilitator why you are having particular issues with this assignment.
