DISORDERS, SANITY, and THERAPY
Sanity…there are SO many good movies about “crazy” people…but look at my power points for some examples.
Watch the opening of As Good As IT Gets for OCD and 555 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44DCWslbsNM of course
there is the Howie Mandel stuff on the right too (555)
or True Life, I have OCD http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=true+life%2C+i+have+OCD&aq=f 555
of course, this is the REAL OC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn1OYlYzgm8 you may recognize Liz Macinvale…she is
Mattress Mack’s daughter and she has spoken about OCD on our campus .
Check out the MANY Faces of Abnormal Psychology http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/psychology/faces/ pick a
connection speed, make sure your speakers are on, and don’t freak out when you hear music, hear voices and people
start talking to you on the screen! You can pick as many disorders as you want… pick a disorder and work your way
through the 5 stage tabs on the top and the steps in each stage on the left. You do NOT have to do each stage but give
each disorder about 10 minutes and give me a 101010 or 202020s and an OVERALL RRR. This means this can be worth
OVER 200 POINTS! This site is REALLY COOL…I hope you check it out!
Depression and Bipolar…there are so many folks who have it…here are some famous ones…with quotes…they are often
very creative people who make the world a better placehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IptYaS5qXKE&feature=related
Check out the DBSA http://www.dbsalliance.org/ 555 groups meet locally.
You knew it had to happen sometime…it’s….DR. PHIL! Here, in a sensationalized but still interesting fashion, he interviews
and simulates the lives of some people who suffer with Schizophrenia. This is the REAL LIFE paranormal activity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJOT45wXErk , 101010 or keep watching all 5 parts for 101010 each, RRR too.
Therapy
What About Bob (2:15) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfrueeBmfXo&feature=related R-rated clip, good example of
various anxiety disorders: OCD, and phobias including agoraphobia as well as
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypochondriasis 5/5/5 for clip, 5/5/5 for wiki. RRR
What About Bob (3:17) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncFCdCjBqcE&feature=related this one is a good example of
systematic desensitization (baby steps) , also you see Freudian “talk therapy” and a lame attempts at Socratic/reflective
listening. However…IT WORKS! BABY STEPS! 5/5/5 RRR
Or as Dory would say…and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmyUkm2qlhA or the sharks in the “AA” program would
say… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TxAj2YL0iU&feature=related 555/RRR
Here is another one with another Bob, Bob Newhart, who played a “shrink” as well, but this clip is from MAD TV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1g3ENYxg9k it is a good example of Anxiety Disorders (a bit of phobias with some
OCD) it is also a good example of FLOODING which is the behavioral approach that is OPPOSITE of systematic
desensitization! 555/RRR.
This one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP6H3LUrd_M is a good example of imagination versus schizophrenia. It
also highlights biomedical theories such as ECT and antipsychotics. 555/RRR
Check out these trailers for 555/RRR
Mr. Brooks, The Soloist, The Fisher King…the list really goes on and on…
Good Will Hunting is a GREAT example for Freudian therapy concepts of denial, repression, transference, catharsis, etc.
but they drop the F bomb like 500 times! You can fish for some clips.
So…because the list goes on and on, I leave it up to you to never stop learning and exploring…give ME examples of
disorders or therapy…give me the TITLE of the CLIP and the amount of TIME on youtube and 555/RRR and I will pay you
for up to 5 of them All of these should be turned in on the next due date , HAVE FUN, and stay safe, de-stressed and
sane!
Just keep swimming!
Class Participation (PART) Success in this class is dependent on practice and “playing” with the material. There is a
significant amount of terminology and multiple exposures to the material in a variety of formats are important.
Participation in “in-class” and “out of class” exercises, discussions, and/or activities are very helpful in triggering recall for
class concepts. In fact, you will PROBABLY remember and ENJOY more of these PART activities than anything
else in the course! Class participation will be measured via the completion and discussion of homework, other “in-class”
activities, demonstrations, as well as subjective appraisal of student performance. There will be a LOT of small, often
impromptu, class assignments made in class (and via the power points), but to be completed mostly outside of class, to
help you understand and apply the material in a fun, friendly and fast way. Class Participation SHOULD track at about
100 points per test and therefore also comprises about 1/5th (20%) of your course grade! Again, if you don’t do
THESE you will only get a C in the class. HOWEVER, anything BEYOND the 100 points per exam WILL be EXTRA
CREDIT but basically this is your *BEST way to… work your way to an A! These participation assignments are
called… 5/5/5s, 10/10/10s, etc. and involve about 5 minutes, 5 sentences, for 5 points, or 10/10/10 and so
on. The 5/5/5s will be 5 bullets/notes/sentences and then an RRR (see paper guidelines on page 3) the 10/10/10 will be a
bit more (10 sentences or bullets and THEN end with an RRR, and so on). These will often be things off of the web like
YouTube, Wiki(pedia), etc., and will be assigned points based on the length of the video or article 5/5/5, 10/10/10 etc.
with SOME 30/30/30s, 60s, 90s, etc. Also, there are… 26 Discovering Psychology (Disco Psych) videos online
https://www.learner.org/series/discovering-psychology/ with Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, which are up to 30/30/30 opportunities
and therefore up to 780 points total!!! Just follow along (or backtrack) with the course schedule (on the last page of this
syllabus, where it says “Disco Psych”) where they are listed with their corresponding Chapter (on the last page of this
syllabus). These bullets must demonstrate that you watched the whole video and the RRR should involve THOUGHT! I
also provide a list of Crash Course Psychology videos on D2L as they correspond to the course. These videos are
available on You Tube for 101010s and there are 40 of them for up to 400 points! Some portions of these videos will be
shown in class lecture: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=crash+course+psychology 780 + 400 is 1180
points! Which means you can almost earn a D just by doing ALL of these movies! But is over 24 hours of video! Finally,
you can watch my pre-recorded lectures, of which there will be about 20×2 hours each for 100/100/100 which means
you could pass the course just by watching 24 hours of those! … LOTS of ways to earn an A
