Problem-Solving and Targeted Intervention for ELLs
Order InstructionsResponse to Intervention (RTI) allows educators to use data to determine when students need targeted instruction and timely supports in learning. Rather than allowing ELLs in the classroom to struggle, RTI provides a way to respond to their learning needs and close the achievement gap. The problem-solving model of RTI is a useful way of planning targeted and more individualized interventions for students.
Create a digital presentation of a minimum of 12 slides using an online tool such as Prezi or Canva to present an intervention plan for a fictional ELL student of your creation based on the Problem-Solving Model in Figure 7.1 of the textbook. Imagine you are sharing with colleagues how to use the problem-solving model of RTI to meet the needs of ELLs in the classroom.
In preparing for your intervention plan, invent the following context and background of the fictional ELL student:
Background of the fictional ELL student, including the name, grade level, and English language proficiency level in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.A content area standard and specific skill the student is struggling with (e.g., retelling stories with key details, counting to 120 by 10s).Fictional assessment data results related to the content area standard and skill the student is struggling with. This can be a classroom assessment that is simply summarized. The data should show a discrepancy between the ELL student’s performance and the accepted performance on the assessment. In your presentation, include the following steps of the intervention plan:
Provide a summary of the fictional ELL student’s background information.Identify and measure the problem: Explain the content area standard and specific skill the ELL student is struggling with and the assessment data that demonstrates the discrepancy between current and accepted performance.Set 1-2 specific goals for the student: Define how much the student should grow.Brainstorm 2-3 interventions: Describe what can be done to resolve the problem.Plan the intervention setting and implementation of an intervention: Describe how and when one of the intervention strategies will be implemented, including the frequency of the intervention. Discuss briefly how the intervention is appropriate for the ELP level of the student.Monitor response to intervention: Explain what formative assessments and progress monitoring tools would be used to determine if the intervention worked.Presenter’s notes are required for each content slide. Presentation must include a title slide and a reference slide with documentation of sources. The title slide and reference slide do not count in the total number of slides.
The digital presentation should include graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately.
Support your presentation with 1-2 scholarly resources.
