Interview Minutes
Translated from Italian
n.b. anonymity was requested. Interview was with a General Managing Director at Saipem S.p.A
Interviewer: As an oil and gas company, what measures is Saipem implementing their impact on the environment?
GMD: Here at Saipem, we are very committed to mitigating the impact of our activities on the environment through our carbon-capture technology known as CO2 Solutions. This approach utilizes nature’s most potent carbon management catalyst, the carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme. By studying and understanding the natural enzyme’s function, Saipem has managed to develop a process that leverages the CA enzyme,
Interviewer: What sets Saipem’s technology aside from others do you think?
GMD: Saipem offers a highly competitive operating cost, something that at this stage in the life cycle of carbon capture is incredibly difficult to implement. Furthermore, unlike traditional methods, this process does not involve the use or production of toxic by-products. It uses rapid absorption kinetics, low energy consumption, and, most importantly, poses no threat to human health or the environment. The beauty of CO2 Solutions lies in its direct capture of post-combustion emissions from industrial sources, such as chimneys. Once it’s captured, the CO2 is purified, making it suitable for reuse or conversion into other valuable products. This adaptable technology can be employed with all types of gaseous effluents. So basically, this means that companies have the opportunity to enhance their industrial processes and at the same time reduce their environmental footprint. I really do believe that innovation is Saipem’s innovative culture is what sets us aside…and our ability to offer a price competitive option.
Interviewer: What is your view on carbon capture, do you think it is a viable option for the future? What is the most crucial aspect that is needed for carbon capture to become a viable option?
GMD: That is a crucial question, to which there are multiple answers. I think that for now, it can act as an option as other technological advancements are made to create cleaner solutions. I think as the world stands now, fossil fuels are here to stay and in that respect I think that carbon capture is the only viable solution to mitigate the impact of these activites. Going forward, for carbon capture to be successfully adopted, there needs to be development with regards to the efficiency and the cost-effectiveness of CCUS. I also think that the integration of carbon capture with renewable energy sources is key to a sustainable energy transition and that CCUS should be viewed as part of a broader portfolio of measure.
Interviewer: What options do you see as an alternative to carbon capture? Or do you think this is the only way forward?
GMD: I think in the field that I am working in, in this present day, carbon capture is the most viable option, that really has the chance to make a significant impact. The major issue for me is the cost of the operations, namely the cost of scaling the process to be able to capture enough carbon to hedge against the impact of the oil and gas industry. There are other options out there, such as enforcing carbon taxes, the electrification of sectors…
