Students should interview a family member or someone close to them with an immigration background. The interviewee should be notified of the class assignment and give consent. The format of interview is open, but students may want to consider introducing creative questions to explore not just how the interviewee arrived where they are now but also how they see themselves fitting into American ethnoracial landscape.
After the interview, students should analyze the biography in relation to the theories and policy developments we covered in the class. You can selectively zoom in for parts of their life that are more revealing of migration and ethnoracial dynamics. Use your sociological imagination and connect the personal with the social. Here are some questions to start with:
What made this person migrate? How was the movement possible? Under what context of reception did this person engage with their newfound homeland? How did the experience of immigration shape their perspective on American society and how do they see them in relation to another ethnoracial group? What was the role of the state?
Make sure to properly cite any sources or readings you are using in the project. Use both in-text citation as well as References at the end (not counted toward the word count).
