You work as a paralegal at a large law firm that has offices around the world. A group of lawyers and legal assistance from several of the European offices are planning to visit your law firm for business meetings and to participate in some training. One of the partners at the firm asks you to put together a PowerPoint presentation for the visiting legal assistants to offer them an overview of the foundations of U.S. contract law. The partner asks you to address the sources of U.S. contract law, including common law and UCC, and what types of contracts those legal authorities apply to. The partner asks you to also address the basics of the history of the UCC and its impact on interstate commerce. Specifically, the partner would like for you to use the following examples to illustrate what types of contracts are handled under the UCC or common law: 1) purchase of 1000 plastic knight figures from a toy manufacturer; 2) contract for house cleaning services; and 3) sale of a mobile home from a dealer. The law partner says that because the firm will distribute the PowerPoint file after the presentation, you should be sure to use the Notes section to address helpful supporting detail and to cite your sources.
The partner also suggests that you just focus on the basics regarding sources of contract law and not to be concerned about including other aspects of contract law, such as contract formation, as the firm is planning to address those kinds of questions at a later point, as needed.
