For this assignment, you will watch one of the films on the Film Analysis list
For this assignment, you will watch one of the films on the Film Analysis list. You may need to watch the film more than once in order to get a thorough understanding of it. I highly recommend that you do a bit of informal research about the film before watching it; while you do not necessarily need to read a detailed summary of it (spoiler alert!), you should have general knowledge of the film’s subject(s), actors, director, and any other relevant information to help you understand how and why the film was made. You do not have to cite this information unless you quote it as part of your analysis.
While watching the film, be sure to take some notes from time to time; feel free to pause it and look up anything you need to in order to make sure you understand the plot, historical context, etc. If you are watching a film adaptation of a novel or play, be sure to note the differences between the two. It may be extremely helpful to have a copy of the novel or play with you to reference while watching the film. Think about any topic you would like to analyze in your essay (see the link to UNC’s Writing Center here: https://writingcenter.unc.edu/tips-and-tools/film-analysis/ ). You may also choose to write a comparison-contrast essay analyzing the differences between the novel/play and the film; for example, you could explain how a film like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof deals with homosexuality in the play versus in the film adaptation, or how and why the ending is changed substantially in Sweet Bird of Youth.
Regardless of the type of analysis you choose to do (see UNC link for examples), your analysis should be a minimum of 500 words and formatted according to MLA ed. guidelines. You do not need a Works Cited page and in-text citations unless you quote the film directly.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Movies for Film Analysis: Summer 2022
*There may be earlier or later versions of some of these titles other than the ones listed; however, please be sure to watch the version listed here, which are considered the “definitive” versions.
Please refer to IMDB.com, TCM.com, or other reputable sites for background information about these films.
If you have read a play or novel for the literary analysis by the same title, you are welcome and encouraged to compare the two versions; however, do not watch the film as a substitute for reading the literature, as the two versions are often quite different.
