Minimum Weekly DB Expectations
- Post an original and thoughtful Main Post to the DB prompt.
- Respond to at least 2 other posts from learners and/or the instructor (Response Posts).
- The first contribution (Main Post or Response Post) must be posted before midnight (Central time) on Friday of each week.
- Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week.
- For DB assignment prompts with a Part One and Part Two, Part One should be addressed in the first week of the unit with a Main Post and minimum of 2 Response Posts, and Part Two should be addressed in the second week of the unit with a Main Post and a minimum of 2 Response Posts.
More on DBs
At the end of each unit, DB participation is assessed based on level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion. DBs allow learners to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB are accepted after the end of the unit. Learners must demonstrate an appropriate depth of understanding of course content to receive credit for having submitted substantive posts. Typically, this is achieved with 3–4 strong paragraphs for Main Posts and 2–3 strong paragraphs for Response Posts.
This DB has three parts:
- Writing a mission statement requires focus and should inspire not only the employees within an organization but the customers, suppliers and community as a whole. What are the nine basic components of a mission statement? Why is it important to include as many of these components as possible in a company’s mission statement?
- There are many analytical tools and techniques available for companies to gauge not only where they stand within the industry but to also assess their sustainability and competitive advantage within the marketplace. Why do you believe it is an important step within a strategic planning process to conduct a SWOT analysis? How can a VRIO help an organization?
- Describe a situation when a TOWS matrix framework would be appropriate.
In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

Mission statement is a term we hear tossed around by businesses of all kinds, but what exactly is a mission statement? According to the Cambridge University Press a mission statement is a widely used strategic tool that emphasizes the uniqueness and identity of an organization (Alegre, I. et al, 2018). It basically is supposed to describe why your business exists. However, to have an effective mission statement you must be careful with your words and get the point across in a short, to the point message.
When a company is trying to create their mission statement there are some helpful strategies that can be used to make it effective. The strategies are as follows: keep it short, make it unique to the business, create expectations, keep it realistic, memorable, make it active, positive, adaptable, and targeted (Quain, S. 2019). You may not be able to hit every strategic point, but trying to keep as many in mind as possible will get you the best results.
It honestly seems like attention spans get shorter and shorter as we move into the future so having something that is short and to the point will be your best option. If it’s too long, most people won’t even get all the way through it before they stop reading and get distracted with something else. Making it unique is where the creative marketing minds come into play. If it’s unique it will most likely be memorable and those go hand in hand. Making it realistic, positive, adaptable, and targeted is also very necessary. Consumers need to be able to believe the message and feel as though it’s speaking to them in some fashion. And coming across with a positive message will be much more attractive to the consumer than something with a negative connotation. An effective mission statement also creates an expectation for the consumer of the product or service being offered. An expectation that supersedes that of the competition.

Unit 3 Discussion Board – Part 1
Good morning everyone,
A mission statement is a concise summary of your business’s purpose, values and objectives. Developing the right mission statement for your company can be a challenge, but once it’s established, it can serve as your guiding principle to ensure your workforce is aligned and to differentiate your company from your competitors. The most effective mission statements inspire and educate. While the result is a short, concise statement, the process of developing your mission statement can be anything but brief. You can choose to involve as many or as few collaborators as you’d like, but the final message should resonate with everyone at your organization, from the founding team to your frontline workers.
By defining precise elements, you’ll understand the problems your business solves, the customers you’re aiming to serve and how your business differs from your competitor's. One way to do this concisely is to share what inspired you to launch your business. Stories are often compelling, and incorporating the main elements of yours into the mission statement enhances your as well as future goals.
1) Be informative but keep it brief.
Your mission statement must function as a brief introductory statement for your company, defining your company’s purpose. Try to keep your mission statement to no more than 25 words. The longer your mission statement is, the less likely people are to read it.
2) Share, edit and refine.
Your mission statement needs to resonate with both internal and external audiences. Therefore, your mission statement creation process should include sharing your draft with applicable stakeholders – including some trusted customers, vendors and partners – to ensure the message rings true to your colleagues across the business. Be open to feedback and tweak your messaging to ensure clarity. A common way to ensure your mission statement aligns with all audiences is to develop one statement to share internally and another to share externally. From there, work to consolidate and polish your messaging so it applies to anyone who reads it. Because mission statements must cover a lot of information in a very concise format, you’ll discover that most companies have poorly worded statements that are meaningless and vague. But when you look at successful companies, you’ll notice that their mission statements are well crafted and incredibly valuable.
