1) I believe the use of technology among young children should be encouraged, but closely monitored. Just in the last 13 years we have seen the emergence of mobilized computers in cell phones with the iPhone and now talks of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Technology advancement is moving at a tremendous pace. I believe it would irresponsible to completely disregard the use of technology among young children specifically in the use of education. Imagine a child that was devoid of any experience with technology in their young age and then expected to use technology at school. This creates a disadvantage to the child. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, young children are immersed in technology and digital devices are becoming cultural tools at the home environment (2012). On the other hand, these digital devices can be destructive for children if used improperly. I have seen children nowadays that need digital devices to be entertained and can even use these devices for inappropriate searches. If the use of technology is not properly monitored it can create destructive behaviors that can lead to more complicated issues in the future. I believe that these digital devices should be limited in time if not being used for educational purposes. In this case, children will not grow strictly dependent on these devices rather have a more balance environment.2) According to WHO there were new guidelines put out last year. For zero-one years old, no screen time is recommended. For age 1, “sedentary screen time is not recommended” (WHO, 2019). WHO recommends two-four year olds have no more than one hour of screen time. My own views are that there are few times kids should be put in front of the tv but there are reasons for it. This is closely monitored time. One reason that we do allow it for younger ages is that my family does not live near any other family members of ours. To be able to have our children interact with them, we do have screen time to video chat a few times a week. This usually consists of anyone who is of walking ages to be running around while grandma/grandpa chat with us. The adults usually only want to see them in their environment doing what they normally do. Even at twelve years old, my oldest is still monitored with his screen time. He does not have traditional social media platforms to utilize but does chat with friends over our gaming system.
